While things might not be A-Ok between Floyd Mayweather and Devin Haney right now, they were totally different when Haney began his career. The undefeated super lightweight champion even used to idolize ‘Money’ Mayweather during his early career. However, some recent incidents have caused cracks to form in their relationship.

Nevertheless, many have highlighted similarities in their boxing styles, which became the topic of discussion in a recent interview with Oscar De La Hoya. While speaking to Fight Hype, the head of Golden Boy Promotions and the promoter of Haney’s next opponent, Ryan Garcia, revealed his thoughts on the Haney-Mayweather comparisons.

Oscar De La Hoya claims Devin Haney “got his own style”

When the reporter from Fight Hype brought up the topic, De La Hoya was quick to explain, “He’s got his own style! He’s his own fighter. He’s going to write his own story, his legacy. It’s going to be what he makes it.” However, De La Hoya suggested he understands why people compare the two fighters.

The head of Golden Boy Promotions said, “I can see why people compare [them]… because of the styles, but only time will tell.” He went on to praise Haney for wanting to fight the best guys in the division, highlighting, “That’s why this division is so special right now. 140, 135, 147, everybody can just fight each other.”

As to what caused a rift between Mayweather and Haney’s corner, here’s everything one needs to know!

A leaked sparring footage changed things

When a fight between Haney and Garcia was being talked about, the latter became close to Floyd Mayweather. Garcia claimed that ‘TBE’ showed him old sparring footage of Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis, where Haney allegedly got roughed up by Tank Davis. Soon afterward, Devin’s father claimed Haney even sparred with Floyd, making Mayweather realize he should stop hang up his gloves.

In a later tweet, even Devin expressed his disdain with Floyd Mayweather for sharing the sparring clip. ‘The Dream’ said, “Floyd [has] been hating a long time.. this ain’t just start. I held my tongue for years because I respect the greats of the sport. But [the] dude is a bona fide hater [and] don’t wanna see nobody win if he [is] not a part of it!”

With that said, even though people seem to think there are similarities between Floyd Mayweather’s and Devin Haney’s boxing styles, Oscar De La Hoya believes Haney is his own fighter, who will create his own legacy. While fans must wait to see if that happens, signs point to a short wait. Do you think Floyd Mayweather and Devin Haney share the same boxing style?
