In boxing, as in life, a single moment can change everything. Ryan Garcia learned this lesson the hard way on Saturday night when he was stopped Gervonta Davis in the seventh round of their highly anticipated super fight. Garcia had been talking a big game in the lead-up to the bout, Davis, on the other hand, proved once again that he is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

The knockout itself was a thing of beauty. ‘Tank’ landed a stinging left hand on Garcia’s liver, forcing the younger fighter to drop to one knee. He tried to get up but failed. The referee counted him out, and the fight was over. It was a devastating loss for ‘KingRy’, who had been undefeated until that point. However, in the aftermath of the fight, Garcia was gracious in defeat. He didn’t make excuses or try to downplay Davis’s victory. Instead, he gave credit where it was due.

Ryan Garcia reveals the reason why he was unable to recover after the 7th-round knockdown

In the post-fight interview, Garcia praised ‘Tank’ for catching him with a perfect body shot. He claimed that he could not recover after he was hit and also had trouble breathing which led him to take the knee. “He caught me with a good body shot and I just couldn’t recover. I couldn’t breathe. I just couldn’t get up,” he said.

Garcia’s humility in defeat was admirable, but it couldn’t take away from the fact that Davis was the better fighter on the night. The 26-year-old from Baltimore had been the favorite heading into the fight, and he lived up to that billing. He was patient and calculated when he needed to be. This was not all as the now 29-0 boxer declared himself to be the next superstar in boxing.

Gervonta Davis declared himself the face of boxing following his dominant victory

After the fight, Davis declared himself the “face of boxing” and it’s hard to argue with him. With the victory, Davis cemented his status as one of the sport’s biggest stars and will now look to face tougher challenges moving forward. “I’m definitely the face of boxing, abso-f***ing-lutely,” he said.

While ‘Tank’s’ bravado may rub some people the wrong way, there’s no denying that he’s a supremely talented fighter. Now, the WBA (regular) champion will look to add the lightweight titles to his cabinet as well and certainly has a bright future in front of him. However, for now, he will be content to bask in the glow of his victory over Garcia and to revel in his status as one of the sport’s biggest draws.
