Rolly Romero got his hands on the WBA super lightweight championship following his victory over Ismael Barroso. Romero’s victory over number-one contender Barroso in a ninth-round stoppage raised eyebrows due to the controversial nature of the fight. As a result, Romero’s next steps are dictated by the sanctioning body, including an immediate title defense against the mandatory challenger, Ohara Davies.
Davies recently beat his fellow countryman Lewis Ritson on March 4 in Ritson’s hometown of Newcastle, England. The TKO victory made him the mandatory challenger for the WBA title. However, Romero and his team were insistent that the now 15-1 boxer would face either Ryan Garcia or Gervonta Davis in his next fight. Over the years, Davies has been a controversial figure in the sport of boxing. Moreover, his recent call to send the referee officiating the title bout to jail landed him in a bit of controversy. Now, he has come out and again slammed Romero for his post-fight comments.
The British boxer took to Twitter and detailed an incident about a sparring session. In the Tweet, he claimed that he knocked out Romero in a sparring session and did it only to impress his sister. “Don’t forget we sparred in Vegas and I put you down, TBH I did that just to impress your sister who was watching boy was she impressed,” he wrote.
