‘I Didn’t Have One Gram of Fat. You Can Imagine I’d Been Four Days Without Food’: Canelo Alvarez Reveals His Dire Health Condition Before Fighting Floyd Mayweather

Mexican boxing phenom, Canelo Alvarez, recently featured in the DAZN’s series, “The Making of”. The boxer has had a fabulous career until now, and the three-part series, will showcase his boxing journey from being a novice to how he became Canelo Alvarez, the world champion. Apart from his recent loss to Russian boxer, Dmitry Bivol, Alvarez has lost only to Floyd Mayweather in his career.
As Saul Alvarez described the struggles he went through to go up against Floyd Mayweather, he said, “I worked so hard to reach that weight. I didn’t eat for four days roughly to get to 152 pounds. I didn’t have one gram of fat. You can imagine I’d been four days without food.”

He further added, “There I started to feel that my body was very tired, very worn down. You can see my body is still skinny. Despite going up 13 pounds, I felt very weak in my legs. I gained weight, but it was mainly liquids, not so much carbohydrates or protein, things to give my body strength. In fact, when I punched, I noticed that I wasn’t punching strongly.”
In September 2013, Mayweather and Alvarez engaged in combat inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Fans eagerly anticipated the bout, which ended with Mayweather winning in a contentious decision. The Mexican has frequently stated his desire for a rematch and believes that if he faced ‘Money’ now, the outcome would be different because, at the time, everything came down to experience.

Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin first met inside the ring in September 2017, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The sensational bout really lived up to fans’ expectations, but it ended in a controversial draw. It was certain that there needs to be a rematch between the two.

The anticipation for the sequel was upping with each passing day. A year later, the fight day finally came, and the two titans went up against each other for the second time in 2018. Both fighters showcased some solid jabs and excellent footwork. However, it ended with Alvarez winning the match via decision.
