Floyd Mayweather reveals the ‘biggest problem’ with Boxing

In a video uploaded by Fight Hype TV, ‘Money’ claimed that there are too many champions in the sport today. According to him, a division must contain four champions under the four-belt system which is the norm in the modern era. However, he stated that there are more than four champions in each division which has resulted in the sport being filled with paper champions.

“What we’re doing is watering the sport down. Everybody is champion now. There should only be four champions at each weight class, but it’s more than four. Now, in the top ten you may have 12 fighters in the weight class that’s champion,” he said. Later in the interview, he also urged that this system needs to change if boxing wants to grow as a sport. Moreover, he also gave an ultimatum if he is not able to change the sport of boxing for the better.

So the sport of boxing, we need to clean this up with all the sanctioning bodies. I’m not just talking about one particular sanctioning body because I was a fighter at one particular time competing at the highest level. I was put in this position to clean this sport up. I don’t want to be in boxing if I can’t help, if I can’t give back,” he added.

Mayweather has been competing in exhibition bouts since his retirement. Moreover, he will face reality show star Aaron Chalmers in the UK on February 25 after his initial opponent pulled out. This only shows his willingness to be involved in the sport even at 45 years of age. However, it seems that he might not be around for long if things remain the same for the sport which is heading in a downward direction compared to other combat sports.
