Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr is widely regarded as one of the best boxers to step foot into the ring. The former five-division champion retired from the sport with a perfect 50-0 record and took on some of the best boxers in his career. However, there are people who are still a little critical of Mayweather’s record due to his history of cherry-picking opponents and also allegedly fighting boxers past their prime. The perfect case for this would be his fight against Manny Pacquiao in which Mayweather was 38 years old, while Pacquiao was 36 and past his prime.

Despite this, Mayweather thinks he still holds more legacy than current greats like Vasyl Lomachenko who won his first world title after just three pro fights. Moreover, he even revealed why current boxers like Loma or Haney will not match up to him and also had some suggestions for the matchmaking bodies.

In a recent interview with FightHype, Mayweather claimed that he earned his title shots, unlike the Ukrainian boxer. According to him, even though Lomachenko did have over 400 fights in his amateur career, he shouldn’t be allowed to fight for titles after just three or four pro fights. “I earned it, whereas you got Lomachenko, a guy that can fight for a world. I mean even though he’s you know. The guy has what 400 amateur fights. He’s a professional anyway, but he shouldn’t be allowed to fight for the world title in his third or fourth fight,” said Mayweather.

This isn’t the first time Mayweather has slammed the pound-for-pound great. Back in 2020, he fired back at a reporter who compared him to Loma and was certainly not happy about the comparison. However, Mayweather also revealed his journey to a world title shot which was drastically different from the Ukrainian boxer’s.

Mayweather details his journey to a title shot

Mayweather pointed out that the difference between him and Lomachenko was the number of fights. He stated that he had to compete in 17 professional fights before he got his title shot.

What I did in my career was I turned professional to fight for the title. Against Genaro Chiravito Hernandez.. I fought 17 fights in a year and a half then I fought for the title, so I earned it. Nothing was given to me,” he added.

Mayweather thinks that Lomachenko should have been tested like him before getting a title shot. However, it is common for highly gifted amateur boxers to compete for world titles early in their professional career. This is because these boxers already have a plethora of experience under their belt. There have also been many boxers who came out of the amateur circuit and were pushed into title contention. This includes talents like Gennady Golovkin, Oleksandr Usyk, and Lomachenko himself, who have all won titles.
