The WBO-NABO super middleweight champion Steven “So Cold” Nelson, who fought as the co-main event in the Herring vs Oquendo card, beat DeAndre Ware via sixth-round TKO, thus retaining his title. Nelson, however, faced adversity in bout after suffering multiple cuts because of repeated headbutts during the bout.

On being asked about the cuts, Nelson said, “When that second cut came, I was like, I know how fighters are when they see an injury. So I said, ‘You know what, I have to get to work. My plan was to go out there and feel him out, don’t rush it too much. That’s why the first couple of rounds, I wasn’t doing too much, and then I picked it up. The headbutt was the perfect time for me to pick it up.”

Nelson then shifted his focus to his next challenge saying, “I feel like I’m ready for a title eliminator, and then let’s go for the title. That was my whole plan, to set myself up where they can’t deny me a world title.”

Steven Nelson vs DeAndre Ware: How did it go down?

Steven Nelson (17-0, 14 KOs) made his pro debut in 2016, where he won via TKO in the first round. Starting the bout aggressively, he kept the pressure on his opponent throughout the fight. Despite getting caught occasionally, he kept moving forward and initiating exchanges. Nelson, however, got hit with a headbutt in the second round, which led to bleeding from his left eye. Despite this, he kept the pressure on and stuck to his gameplan.

Because of this, he was winning the rounds on the judges’ scorecards. Once again in the fifth round, he got hit near the injured spot on his left eye due to a massive head collision. More blood started pouring out of Nelson’s eye by the end of the round.

In the sixth round, despite having a problem with his vision, Nelson turned up the pace. At the end of a combination, he caught Ware with a hard left hook that visibly wobbled him. Nelson then went for the finish and started attacking the body and head with different combos. Although Ware tried his best to survive by getting into clinches and moving away from Nelson, the referee had seen enough and stopped the fight.
