Former 6-division champion Oscar De La Hoya is considered one of the all-time greats in boxing. During the late 1990s and early 2000s De La Hoya along with Floyd Mayweather Jr. defined boxing and were two of its biggest stars. However, ‘Golden Boy’ did not have an easy path to stardom and fame as he did not come from a privileged background and reportedly, was often subjected to abuse in his childhood.

Moreover, in an episode of Mike Tyson‘s podcast Hotboxin’, he made a startling confession about his childhood. De La Hoya revealed how his mother often beat him with a belt daily when he was a kid. He also added that his mother never told him that she loved him which is something that stuck with him for the rest of his life. However, he claimed that he could now understand his mother’s reasoning and was content with his past.

“My mom used to beat me up every day. She used to beat me up every day. Every fu*king day, you know with the belt. Every fu*king day man you know? How crazy is that? Can you believe that my mother never told me she loves me and I never had the opportunity to tell her that I loved her. You know how painful that is? No, but I actually understand it now. I understand why she couldn’t say it because maybe her mother treated her wrong,” said De La Hoya.
