On September 14, 2024, Edgar Berlanga and Caleb Plant made it evident that they would dominate the Super Middleweight division in the coming years. Plant had made his comeback after a year and dispatched Trevor McCumby after nine hard-fought rounds to seize the interim WBA super middleweight championship. On the main event of the same card, Berlanga fought Canelo Alvarez. And even though they lost the match, he went the distance, proving his grit and determination.

However, that event also kicked off an intense rivalry between these two that has been flaming up with each passing day. The rivalry reached a boiling point during the Canelo-Berlanga fight week when both hurled insults at each other during the press conference. Since then, the duo has been involved in constant back-and-forth on social media. On Sunday, the rivalry escalated even further as Edgar Berlanga posted a screenshot on his Instagram story revealing frightening private messages with Caleb Plant.

Rivalries crossing lines

‘The Chosen One’ posted a screenshot of his chat with Caleb Plant on his Instagram story, which he later deleted. However, Boxing Kingdom, an X account dedicated to boxing news, reposted the screenshot after removing a part of the conversation which according to them was “too graphic to share.”

The super middleweight duo was having an intense argument on the chat. Berlanga stated, “I’m not afraid of nobody n***a. I come from nothing where n****as get shot everybody crackhead dope IP on my door step n***a,” implying that he does not fear Plant as he is from Bushwick, Brooklyn.

‘Sweethands’ replied with, “You talking to someone who don’t give a f**k about none of that s**t. No one cares where you’re from.” The Nashville native made it clear that he does not care about Berlanga’s background and where he is from; he is only concerned about their fight.

Berlanga then mentioned Plant’s comment about avoiding him and wrote, “You keep saying I’m not mentioning your name. Like if I’m scared or some shit. I’ll die in that ring,” stating that he is not running away from the challenge. But if that wasn’t enough, in a few more messages, Edgar Berlanaga went a step ahead. This is the conversation that Boxing Kingdom edited out of their post.

In the messages now going viral on the internet, Berlanga could be seen inciting Caleb Plant to a gunfight adding, “We gon see who shoot better.” In the very next message, he even threatened Caleb Plant with bodily harm, going into a vivid description of what he would do when they finally face each other. However, throughout their frightening exchange, Plant remained calm and collected.

This is not the first time that Caleb Plant has challenged Berlanga for a match. Ever since their first encounter at the Canelo-Munguia fight in May, the interim WBA super middleweight champion has been vocal about Berlanga avoiding his name as a potential opponent.

A few months ago, while speaking to Andre Ward, Berlanga revealed what sparked his rivalry against Caleb Plant. According to the Tennessee native, the tension started after the Alvarez vs. Munguia fight. As Berlanga was leaving the event and going towards his car, he found the Plant nudging him with an offer.

“I didn’t even see he was right next to me. He just hit like, ‘Yo what’s up? When we going to run it?” revealed Berlanga. At that time, ‘The Chosen One’ was focused on his fight against Canelo Alvarez and let Plant know his decision.

However, Plant, 32, persisted with the same question and it started bugging the 27-year-old. “He just kept going, going. Pressing me. Bro, we New Yorkers, you know. The way I was growing up, I take that as disrespect. You not going to punk me or something. So, that’s when I got aggressive on him,” explained Berlanga.

Things got heated up as the pair got into each other’s faces and started hurling insults at each other. Things have been tense between these two since then and it looks like it has reached a critical point where it can lead to an actual fight anytime.
