Now, Terence Crawford is firing shots at Canelo Alvarez. The Mexican superstar star is gearing up to face Edgar Berlanga on September 14th in Las Vegas. However, while on a press run for his next month’s fight, Canelo is already making headlines for his various verbal altercations with the rest of the boxing community. Not long ago, HE Turki Alalshikh revealed he had reached out to Canelo’s team with an offer to fight ‘Bud’ Crawford during the Crawford vs. Madrimov live telecast. Even ‘Cinnamon’ had shown openness to such a bout by claiming it would be an easy fight, and he would take up the offer if the money was right.

However, then His Excellency revealed in a post that he is no longer interested in staging such an affair. This drew a response from Alvarez, who claimed he didn’t really care and wasn’t looking for the fight either way. And, of course, things escalated when Alalshikh turned to X again, berating Canelo noting that he is only looking for “easy show-only fights”. The dust hadn’t even settled yet, and now, Crawford has joined the fray branding Canelo’s $150 million demand to fight him “excuses”.

Canelo Alvarez inadvertently confirms Crawford’s belief

While appearing on Shawn Porter’s The PorterWay Podcast, one host probed Crawford about what his biggest motivation would be if the Canelo fight never pans out. In response, Crawford revealed his sole motivation to continue fighting was an eventual bout against Canelo Alvarez. Crawford suggested the things Canelo has been saying about a potential fight against him made him laugh.

It’s worth noting that Canelo had claimed earlier that if he ended up fighting Crawford, he would have nothing to gain from the fight—people would simply disregard his win saying Crawford was moving up weight classes and was therefore smaller than Canelo. However, Crawford pointed out that Canelo has been fighting boxers from lower-weight divisions for a long time. “Canelo [has] been making his own catchweight for years, Canelo fought a smaller Mayweather. Canelo fought a smaller Amir Khan. Jermell Charlo,” he said countering Canelo’s argument.

“[He won’t make as much money with] Berlanga right now, that he will with me. But yet he [has] all these excuses,” Crawford further added, slamming Canelo for his many reasons for not taking the fight against him. ‘Bud’ argued that if it was an easy fight for Canelo, why wouldn’t he take the offer from His Excellency and make millions with little effort? He reiterated Canelo’s ask of “150 million to fight me”, which reaffirms his belief that he is a threat to Canelo, adding, “I’m a threat to his legacy.”

Meanwhile, a renowned boxing trainer and cutman has suggested fighting Canelo Alvarez at 168 pounds could be a step too far for Terence Crawford.

Bob Santos feels Terence Crawford has earned the right to fight Canelo

Terence Crawford became a four-division champion after defeating Israil Madrimov last Saturday in Los Angeles. He had previously achieved undisputed status in two divisions, making him one of the most accomplished boxers of the current era. Despite all these accolades, Bob Santos doesn’t think Crawford could replicate his prior performance against Canelo Alvarez.

In an interview with Boxing Scene, Santos said, “I think it’ll be a step too big for him, but he has earned the right to try it… I could be wrong. He could prove us wrong. But for the most part, I think that’s just a lot to ask of Bud to go to 168.” Since Crawford’s fight against Madrimov wasn’t his best showing, Santos believes, “he would deserve the fight based on his career. Not just one performance.”

With that said, it doesn’t look like a potential fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford would ever materialize, especially after Canelo started beefing with the man who made everything possible. What’s your take on this? Who’s in the wrong?
