Devin Haney recently broke the boxing world with his victory over Australian boxer, George Kambosos Jr. and becoming the first lightweight champion to hold the WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF championships at the same time since 1990.

The fight took place in Melbourne at the Marvel Stadium in front of 41,129 fans who were staunchly supporting Kambosos, but this didn’t matter much to Haney as he out-boxed ‘The Ferocious One’ and secured a comfortable victory via decision.

Haney shares his experience

In the post-fight press conference, a reporter had a question for Devin Haney on his experience of fighting in front of a hostile crowd, he asks, “What was it like coming out to such animosity from the entire crowd they were pretty vocal in being against you, how did that feel?”

Haney seemed amused by the question and responded by saying, ” It didn’t feel that bad like I said when I first came out they were kind of booing me but they were cheering out, I was hearing cheers and boos at the same time.

He then adds that this was a great experience for him and also took shots at the crowd, “It was like it was a hell of an experience. It was like crazy I silenced the crowd pretty much, didn’t really hear the crowd too much.”

It is hard to argue with Haney as the American champion did put on a masterclass by keeping Kamabosos Jr. at a distance with his jab and executing his game plan perfectly. The crowd became silent after the first few rounds as it seemed clear where the fight was headed.

What’s next for Devin Haney?

Devin Haney is now the undisputed champion of the Lightweight Division and will certainly have a target on his back. He might have to face Kambosos Jr. in a rematch as the Australian does have a rematch clause in his contract that states Haney will have to give a rematch if he wins the first fight. But fans feel a rematch is unwarranted due to the fight being so lopsided in favor of Haney. Nevertheless, Kambosos Jr. is keen to fight Haney again and will certainly enforce his rematch clause.

If Haney is somehow able to cancel the rematch with Kambosos Jr; the potential opponents for him could include Gervonta Davis and Vasyl Lomachenko who will certainly be interesting matchups for the 23-year-old champion.
