‘I Was Suicidal’: Mental Health Advocate Tyson Fury Brutally Honest About Not Being Able to Deal With Life During Retirement Before Announcing Comeback

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury retired from boxing after beating Dillian Whyte back in April. However, ‘The Gypsy King’ has called off his retirement for the time being as he will face Derek Chisora on December 3 to end the year with another bout.
Many believed that Fury would actually hang up his gloves after his victory in April. But this was short-lived after Fury immediately started calling out almost every fighter for his return. The reason behind this has now been revealed by the champ himself as he detailed what his life was like during retirement.

In an interview with Top Rank boxing, he stated that he was very depressed after vacating his title and did not know what to do with his life anymore. “So I had a lot going on when I vacated the Ring Magazine. When I called up Mauricio and said thank you I’m out. The realization that it’s actually over. It was like 4 or 5 days, I was down very low. I was suicidal. I’ll be truthful and it was like I don’t know what is going to happen now.” said Fury.

However, he then added that boxing was the only way for him to find meaning and get out of the slump he was in. “I’ve got to come back because I can’t deal with this right now. I’ll deal with it down the line but for now, I’m gonna keep boxing and keep doing what I got to do.” he added

Fury has been a professional boxer for the better part of his life and moving away from it naturally had a toll on his mental health. However, for the time being, Fury feels that boxing is the only outlet that can help him with his mental health struggles.

The Gypsy King has previously struggled with mental health in the past following his victory over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015. Even then, boxing looked like the only way for him to get better as he came back to become a champion once again.
