Floyd Mayweather was planning on announcing it himself, but alas! Just the other day, ‘Money’ Mayweather announced he will get back in the ring one more time against an unknown opponent! He also suggested he will reveal the identity on May 15, but ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez seems to have gotten to it first.

Hours ago, Rodriguez hopped on X to announce to the masses that the five division champion will face former rival Víctor Ortiz on August 24 at the Plaza de Toros México. Ortiz and Mayweather went toe-to-toe all the way back in September 2011, where Floyd Mayweather knocked out ‘Vicious’ after the latter head butted him in round four.

Is a rematch also on the cards?

Rodriguez wrote, “Mayweather in… They tell me that Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather will announce an exhibition fight against Víctor ‘Vicious’ Ortiz for August 24 at the Plaza de Toros México… Wednesday they give more details… Mayweather KO4 Ortiz in 2011 by catching him with his guard down after a headbutt.”

Floyd is coming off a win over John Gotti III from last year, which had ended in an all-out brawl after the referee stopped the fight because of trash talk and abusive language inside the ring. While the chances of that happening again are low, the boxing world isn’t exactly happy about the matchup. At least, that’s what the comment section of Rodriguez’s tweet confers!

Fans suggest no one cares about the fight

Despite retiring from the sport back in 2017, Floyd Mayweather has time and time again made his way back into the ring and fans have rallied behind these exhibition fights. However, there seems to be a change in opinion! One user suggested Victor is relatively unknown in Mexico! But that could be because Ortiz was born in the United States, Garden City, Kansas, to be exact.

Another user questioned who would actually want to watch this fight! While ‘Money’ might not be as popular as he once was, he still boasts a loyal fan base, who will definitely look to attend the fight.

Even the next user echoed the same sentiment, suggesting absolutely no one cares about the fight. However, that can only be determined when the fight actually happens.

Someone else brought up the Mexican cartels, claiming if Floyd decided to go to Mexico, he would never come back to the US. The user wrote, If Floyd goes to Mexico he not coming back the cartel will buy off security the event won’t be worth going the mafia gone be there.”

One user suggested a fight against Manny Pacquiao or Juan Manuel Marquez could have been a worthwhile fight, but no one knows Ortiz. Even though he failed to achieve fame as Mayweather, Ortiz has faced some of the best fighters of his time.

With that said, Floyd Mayweather didn’t even get to announce his opponent, and fans seem to be on his case. While Ortiz isn’t the most exciting opponent, it would be interesting to see what their old rivalry produces in August! Would you be down to watch this fight?
