Floyd Mayweather Jr. is known for his bold statements and self-promotion, and his recent claim that he would have stopped Canelo Alvarez if they had fought in their respective primes is no exception. The two did fight back in 2013 when Alavez was at the ripe age of 22. ‘Money’ Mayweather on the other hand was 36 years old and a veteran in the sport at this time. In addition, it is safe to say that the match was a display of dominance by ‘TBE’ who won via a unanimous decision.

However, despite many claiming that Saul was not in his prime during this fight, according to Mayweather, he was the one who was old. He even revealed how he would fare out if both fighters had fought each other in their primes.

Floyd Mayweather details how the Canelo Alvarez fight would have gone down if he was in his prime

In an interview with BetOnline_ag, the former champion praised the Mexican boxer for his skills. However, he claimed that Alvarez was the one who was in his prime during the fight, and if Mayweather too was in his prime, he wouldn’t have needed 12 rounds to finish the fight.

“Canelo Alvarez is a helluva fighter. [People talk about] a prime Mayweather vs. a prime Canelo. I fought a prime Canelo. I was the older Mayweather fighting prime Canelo. The fight wouldn’t have gone the distance if it were a prime Mayweather,” he said.

While Alvarez was certainly a talented fighter at the time, he was far from the polished, dominant force that he is today. In the years since his loss to Mayweather, he has fought and defeated some of the best fighters in the world, including Gennady Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev, and Billy Joe Saunders. However, ultimately, the question of who would win in a hypothetical prime Mayweather vs. prime Alvarez matchup is impossible to answer.

Canelo Alvarez has a different take on the subject

In an interview with GQ Sports back in 2022, the Mexican star gave his take on how a prime vs prime bout with Mayweather would play out. Moreover, he claimed that the fight came down to experience which was the thing Alvarez lacked in their matchup. He added that today’s Alvarez is a far more experienced and better fighter and could beat Mayweather, as reported by Bleacherreport.

Simply, it was down to experience. If I compare that Canelo with Canelo today, they are completely different. It’d be a completely different fight now [against Mayweather]” he said

Boxing is a sport where styles make fights, and both fighters have unique attributes that could give them an advantage in certain scenarios. However, it’s clear that Canelo has improved drastically since his loss to Mayweather, and that he would be a formidable opponent for anyone in the sport today.
