Russian court found Griner guilty of smuggling and storing drugs and sentenced her to a 9-year prison sentence. Claressa Shields shared her disregard toward the Russian court as they announced the 9-year-long prison sentence to the athlete. Shields also stated that she would never go to Russia for anything.

Stevenson said that a 9-year prison sentence is a disgrace. He further offered prayers for Griner’s family and the people who love her.

The world’s attention was rapidly drawn to the news, and many were stunned as it broke. As per CNN, American President Joe Biden said, “Today, American citizen Brittney Griner received a prison sentence that is one more reminder of what the world already knew: Russia is wrongfully detaining Brittney. It’s unacceptable, and I call on Russia to release her immediately so she can be with her wife, loved ones, friends, and teammates.”
According to Biden, the basketball player is being held by Russia wrongfully, and this is unacceptable. He further stated that his administration would use all available means to return the athlete to her home safely.
