Former world heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson, is undoubtedly one of the living legends in the world of boxing. It can be said that his powerful performances inside the ring and his iconic personality outside, have propelled him to the realm of boxing’s demigods. However, it seems like Tyson is not too fond of this ‘superhero’ status. And he even addressed the same during a recent podcast episode, while referring to himself as a god of the gutters.

Tyson was recently hosting his ‘Hotboxin with Mike Tyson‘ podcast with rapper Ice Cube as the guest. Moreover, former Los Angeles Lakers small forward Matt Barnes was present as the co-host for the episode.
Mike Tyson calls himself the god of the gutter
There is no denying that Mike Tyson is considered an inspiration for many. In fact, Ice Cube expressed his admiration for Tyson during the podcast. He said, “You know, you’re a superhero man. Without a doubt, you’re a superhero. And we looked at you as a superhero. You showed us superheroes fall, get back up, and do it again. That’s a real hero, man.”
Cube also mentioned that anyone could possibly be a front-runner. But the ones who are capable of getting back up on their feet are the ones with true grit.

Tyson, on the other, did not share the same thoughts about himself. He responded by saying, “I get my steps from the gutter and sewage. In the gutter, I’m god ni**a. And in the sewage, I reign supreme. So f*ck all that hero sh*t.”
However, Cube was quick to tell Tyson that he was a hero, regardless of what he thought of himself.
Tyson’s fall from grace
A prime Tyson was considered one of the most decorated heavyweights of that time. And his achievements were no small feat either. ‘The Baddest Man on The Planet’ was the youngest heavyweight champion, and also the first man to unify the WBC, WBA, and IBF heavyweight titles.

In fact, many boxers even shuddered at the thought of facing a prime Tyson. But behind all this glitz and glory was a troubled young man who was constantly in battle with his rough past. Moreover, the loss of his trainer and father figure, Cus D’Amato, took a major toll on him. This, combined with years of bad management and criminal convictions saw the idol come crashing down.
However, Tyson later acknowledged his mistakes and turned over a new leaf. With this new revival, Tyson has become one of the most respected figures in the world of sports.
