Canelo Alvarez has knocked out opponents like Caleb Plant, Sergey Kovalev, Liam Smith, and Amir Khan. And who can forget the time he hit Billy Joe Saunders so hard he fractured Saunders’ orbital bone? But is he the most dangerous puncher in boxing today? The Mexican Superstar is about to go toe-to-toe against Edgar Berlanga on September 14th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. And boy, can Berlanga knock people straight to next week?
The 27-year-old won his first 16 fights by first-round knockouts, meaning there’s no shortage of knockout power there. However, does that mean he is better than Canelo? While appearing in an interview with Fight Hub TV, veteran boxer and former WBO international super middleweight champion Gabriel Rosado revealed who is more powerful.

Gabriel Rosado brands Berlanga’s punches as shotgun shots
While purely in a technical sense, Berlanga isn’t even in the same league as Canelo Alvarez. However, power is something the younger boxer has a boatload of. Despite that, Rosada feels it won’t be of much help to Berlanga while explaining their techniques. “Canelo knows how to switch up that speed where Berlanga’s just shooting that shotgun,” said Rosado.

He elaborated, “And that takes experience to understand how to switch speeds, how to throw decoy shots, how to just throw a lift you up with an uppercut just to set up the hook to the body.” This led Rosada to conclude that Canelo Alvarez is indeed the more dangerous puncher of the two because not only can Canelo Alvarez pack the punch, but he can also manipulate the punches to set up bombs.
To put things into perspective, Canelo Alvarez has 61 total wins in his professional career, 39 of which came from knockouts. And mind you, these wins came against the best of the best boxers in the world. Whereas Berlanga hasn’t faced the same kind of opposition in his career thus far. While his frequency of knockout wins is impressive, it pales in comparison to Canelo’s level of competition. Meanwhile, Edgar Berlanga is counting on Canelo Alvarez to take him for granted.

Edgar Berlanga claims Canelo Alvarez will walk into a brick wall
Edgar Berlanga is banking on Canelo Alvarez, underestimating him in their upcoming fight. Berlanga told Boxing Scene that he believes Canelo is “overlooking”: “He thinks it’s a cakewalk for him, and that he’s just going to walk in and make $35-40 million against a younger guy.” Berlanga is convinced that Canelo’s confidence will play into his hands, claiming, “He’s going to walk into a brick wall. He’s going to see something different.”

To prepare for the biggest fight of his career, Berlanga has isolated himself in the high-altitude wilderness of Boulder, Colorado, asserting, “When God wants you to elevate in life, he isolates you.” Despite the 18-to-1 odds stacked against him, Berlanga is determined to showcase his boxing IQ and mental fortitude, insisting, “The most important thing in boxing is the mind.”
