The T-Mobile Arena of Las Vegas, Nevada saw one of the most lethal clashes of the year on June 29th between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. In the end, it was Terence Crawford who went home on the sounds of a historic victory. By defeating Spence Jr., Crawford emerged as the ultimate unified winner in the welterweight division. Immediately after the fight took its course, Spence Jr. invoked the rematch clause in their contract.

Spence Jr. had not gone down without putting up a stellar fight. Despite Crawford establishing his dominance in the ring right from the beginning, Spence Jr. did not give up until almost the end of the fight. By the 9th round, a visibly exhausted Spence was defeated through a series of brutal blows that knocked him out. Indicating at a rematch before the year ends, the fighter has hoped to move up the weight for it. But is it the right course for him? Joel Diaz seems to think it isn’t.

The Mexican former pro-boxer in the lightweight class heavily disagreed with ‘The Truth’ Spence Jr.’s choice to invoke the rematch clause. Diaz thinks the rematch won’t be any different from the initial fight. His prediction is based on the prowess Crawford has shown time and again. Diaz said, “But honestly, realistically, it will be no different. The same outcome. It will be the same outcome and I think on the next one it will be more benefit for Crawford in a better fashion because he’ll be stronger.”

While invoking the rematch clause, ‘The Truth’ expressed his wishes to move up to 154 pounds. While the contract allows for the defeated fighter to call for a rematch within 30 days of the initial fight, the right to determine the weight class lies with the winner ‘Bud’ Crawford.

Commenting on how moving up to 154 is actually a decision in favor of Crawford, Diaz said, “I mean the fact that Errol Spence is moving to 54 is like Crawford is moving to 54 too. He’s a big boy as well and that night I saw a Crawford bigger than Errol Spence. He looked bigger that night so there is no difference I can tell you this if it’s a business fight; it’s good for Errol Spence. But other than that it doesn’t benefit him right now.”

The Mexican fighter also suggested Spence take a while before he fights Bud again. He suggested the fighter first take up a smaller and easier fight, build his confidence, and then take on the unified world champion.

Joel Diaz saw the Bud Victory coming

Before the former Mexican fighter commented on Spence’s decision to call for a rematch, he also elaborated on why he thought Bud’s victory was a given. Commending on Crawford’s great performance in the ring, he said that he always predicted the result of the fight in Bud’s favor.

Diaz said, “Yeah I did. I’ve always said it. You know thanks to Terence Crawford cause he came through. He put up a great performance. I’ve always said that Terence Crawford would stop Errol Spence before the 10th. Even the day of the fight I made a lot of bets. I bet a lot of money on a lot of bottles of tequila”.

He also explained why he thought Bud would stop The Truth by the 10th round itself. He backed his prediction by saying that in this generation, Bud is a fighter with an ability that is beyond any other fighter. He even thinks that Crawford let the fight go on for longer than was necessary. According to Diaz, the fighter could have put Spence down in the seventh round itself. But he pushed the victory until the 9th.
