Canelo Alvarez is all set to face off against Jermell Charlo on 30 September 2023 at T-Mobile Arena. On one side, ‘Cinnamon’ is defending his undisputed super Middleweight championship. On the other, ‘Iron Man’ is moving up not one but two weight classes to sweep all the titles held by the Mexican superstar. What’s more, Jermell Charlo isn’t new to doing something like that. He did the same thing in his weight class by securing all four major sanctioning titles. But considering Charlo has to move up weight classes, does that give Canelo a size advantage?

In a recent tweet from Michael Benson, Canelo shot down any claims about having a size advantage over Charlo. He further added – things are not different for good fighters like Charlo. If anything is different, it’s the opponent, Canelo said. While some might say ‘Cinnamon’ is the defending champion, that is not the case! Most fans are in agreement with the statement from the former pound-for-pound best fighter in the sport.

Canelo Alvarez sets things straight

In November 2021, Canelo moved up weight classes to take down Caleb Plant for his IBF title. So, who says that Charlo can’t do the same to the Mexican superstar for his titles? In response to Benson’s tweet regarding Canelo’s statement of weight advantage, most fans side with Canelo.

Like this user, who said, “They’re comparable natural sizes tbh. If Canelo wins, as I’d expect, it’s mostly due to be the better fighter. It’s not an insane size mismatch like GGG-Brook, Loma-Rigo and Spence-Mikey, even though Mell is moving up two weights.” Besides agreeing with Canelo, the user also pointed out size differences in other fights.

The next user agreed by indicating Canelo realized that after his loss against Dmitry Bivol on May 7, 2022. The comment read, “He is spitting fact, the reality hit Canelo when he come against Bivol.”

Another user was quick to point out that Canelo also moved weight classes to fight Rocky Fielding. The user said, “That’s true, Canelo moved up and fought Rocky Fielding.” Canelo moved up to 168 pounds and defeated Rocky via third-round TKO. During the fight, Canelo delivered a beatdown to Rocky, making it a one-sided affair.

Some users were just there to express their excitement about the fight, like this user, who said, “Not sure who will win this. Gonna be a close matchup, but one thing for sure, two things for certain… it’s gonna be a night to remember.” As two undisputed kings clash, it will indeed be a night to remember.
