The Gervonta Davis vs. Shakur Stevenson debate rages on. And now, Olympic Bronze medal winner and former interim IBF super middleweight champion Andre Dirrell has suggested it’s too soon for Stevenson to go toe-to-toe with ‘Tank’ Davis. Stevenson is slated to enter the ring against Joe Cordina at Kingdom Arena, Riyadh Saudi Arabia.

The October 12th bout will be ‘Sugar’ Stevenson’s first fight under the Matchroom Boxing banner. Eventually, the plan is to fight William Zepeda, which Eddie Hearn believes will lead Stevenson to a clash with Davis. However, while appearing in an interview with Fight Hub TV, alongside Andre Ward and Andre Berto, Dirrell warned Stevenson. 

Gervonta Davis’ power is the key

Despite Stevenson calling out Tank on several occasions, Dirrell felt “it’s too soon for Shakur.” While he thinks the potential fight between Shakur and Davis is pretty neck to neck, he couldn’t help but give Davis a “10% edge” over Shakur because “of the power” Davis has displayed in his previous fights.

However, this doesn’t mean, ‘The Resurrected’ wasn’t intrigued by the matchup, as he said, “I want to see how he deals with it if he has to be there.” Dirrell further elaborated, suggesting he would want to see how Stevenson reacts to getting caught multiple times during the fight with Davis’ vicious shots.

Regardless, until he sees that, Dirrell’s opinion of Shakur Stevenson isn’t favorable. “I don’t think he stands up to it, man. I think he takes the first few blows, but if he gets caught clean too much, man, I see Tank ending it,” Dirrell said. It’s also worth mentioning that Davis was pursuing a bout against Vasyl Lomachneko, but that fight fell through, as ‘Loma’ claimed he wanted to spend more time with his family. 

It’s unclear who Davis will fight next, but when the Stevenson fight does go down, one former world champion feels he knows exactly who will win. 

George Kambosos Jr. on Davis vs. Shakur Stevenson

Former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. and Stevenson entered a heated battle of words not too long ago on social media. The duo hurled insults at each other as Kambosos claimed Davis would easily get the better of Stevenson when the fight did happen. And guess what? He is ready to bet millions on it. 

“A million he knocks him his buck teeth out out cold. Wont happen though shakur just talks. Maybe if it’s 5 on 1 like his little street fight,” Kambosos Jr. wrote. He doesn’t just think Davis would defeat Stevenson; he also believes that Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney, and Vasyl Lomachenko—interestingly, all fighters Kambosos has faced and lost to, except Lopez—would come out on top against Stevenson.

With the predictions for the potential fight, it appears that not a lot of people believe Shakur Stevenson would be able to get his hand raised in the end. However, boxing is no stranger to upsets, and Stevenson certainly has the skills to prove the doubters wrong. Ultimately, we won’t know the outcome until the fighters step into the ring.
