Canelo Alvarez will reportedly face the WBO 168 lbs champion, Billy Joe Saunders, in May, following his upcoming title defense against Avni Yildirim on February 27. A fight between Alvarez and Saunders would bring two prime elites against each other, citing a nail-biting contest for the fans.

However, unbeaten welterweight, Vergil Ortiz Jr., doesn’t see anything exciting, if the fight goes down per his assumptions. The 22-year-old has envisioned it to be a tough contest, but not an interesting one, putting some doubt on Billy Joe Saunders’ corner.

Ortiz Jr. has connected with FightHype and has talked about several things, one being his thoughts on the possible super middleweight thriller between Alvarez and Saunders.

He said, “It should be a tough fight. I don’t know how Billy is gonna go around about it. It really depends, I don’t know if he is just gonna stick and move the entire time, if he is gonna try to bring the fight. It really depends, I think it’s gonna be a kind of boring fight, if I think it’s gonna go how it’s gonna go.”

Vergil Ortiz Jr. added, “It’s gonna be very technical, but it’s not gonna be a fan-friendly fight.”

Nevertheless, it’s the fight that makes sense and would bring a lot of attention to the sport. Following a successful win over Callum Smith, Alvarez is now the WBA and WBC super-middleweight champion. While he envisions unifying all the belts at 168 lbs, Saunders might be his toughest test at the weight class.

Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders- More about the title fight

Though he may not seem like a massive threat on paper, Avni Yildirim can actually shatter the plans for a 168 lbs title unification fight between Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders. He will challenge Alvarez for the WBA and WBC straps this weekend and on bagging a win, he can smoothly replace the Mexican in the title ride.

However, it won’t be a simple task as Yildirim will have to push his limits to vanquish a mighty Canelo. After the fight, we can predict an outcome of the possible bout between Saunders and Alvarez.

It’s boxing and anything can happen. Hence, it’s still early to say anything about the future super middleweight championship bouts.

Do you think Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders will happen in the future? If yes, will Vergil Ortiz Jr’s prediction come true?
