The bout which was termed as a major upset took place in the second round of the 2012 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in Qinhuangdao, China. Following Marshall’s win in China, she was the favorite to win in the 2012 London Olympics. However, she was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the Kazakh boxer Marina Volnova. The gold was eventually won by her former rival, Shields.

Shields (10-0, 2 KOs) who is currently one of the top pound-for-pound boxers believes she is the better fighter of the two and will beat Marshall in the rematch. Shields said in an Instagram live video “You’re not ranked high. You’re known over here, you’re probably not that much known in England. When asked about the rematch she saidClaressa is the undisputed Middleweight Champion so in that aspect she is ahead of me. I believe that fight will happen soon and that I will beat her again like I did as an amateur. I think I’m twice the fighter now than I was when we last fought, so it makes no difference to me where the fight takes place, I’ll beat her again.”

Eddie Hearn’s Take

After the two had a back and forth on Twitter, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn declared this war of words “boring” and said, “let’s just make the fight!”. He proceeded to ask Claressa on twitter about her next fight as Marshall would be fighting in October so he could make the fight. Hearn is planning to put this on the Joshua vs Pulev undercard in December which would be an absolute treat for the fans.
