Calling the results of the Jaime Munguia vs. Bruno Surace fight on Saturday at the Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico, an upset would be an understatement. Just six months ago, Munguia was undefeated, but now, his resume is marked with two losses—the first came in May against Canelo Alvarez.

Going into the fight against Surace, Munguia was the obvious choice to win for fans and experts alike—the fight itself looked like a mere show. Surace of France hadn’t fought in over a year, while Munguia survived Canelo to record his first career defeat and then bounced back with a win against Erik Bazinyan.

When the fight began, Munguia had started strong dropping his French opponent in the second round of the fight, sending his hometown crowd into a frenzy. While the knockdown seemed like the trailer for how the rest of the fight would go, things changed in the blink of an eye. Munguia was dominating the bout while pushing Surace to the ropes in the sixth round. 

Then suddenly, Surace threw a jab that blinded Munguia for a second and followed it with a thundering right cross. Munguia was down on the canvas—while he tried to get back up, he could not beat the referee’s count. Immediately afterward, ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez took X to report that Munguia’s co-promoter Zanfer Boxing is looking for a rematch. 

“I’m told that Zanfer intends to activate the rematch clause for Jaime Munguia vs Bruno Surace 2 in the first half of 2025 after the surprising result on Saturday in Tijuana,” Rodriguez reported. “There will be details in this regard in the next few days.” Meanwhile, this update was also shared on Instagram by ‘Mo’ Boxing, No Problem,’ which attracted a comment from Antonio Tarver.

The former IBF light heavyweight champion claimed Munguia needs a new trainer. “He needs a #MasterTrainer they’re not getting the lessons… How long have I been saying this?” Tarver wrote. Meanwhile, Surace has commented on the potential rematch with Munguia.

What made Surace’s win even more shocking is the fact that before this fight, though the Frenchman was undefeated, he just had five knockout wins to his name. To top it off, he was a natural middleweight fighting at super middleweight for this bout. Regardless, following the upset, which could be the knockout of the year, or even upset of the year, Surace shared his thoughts on a rematch.

“I know that he is an excellent boxer. So, we worked on our counter punches,” Surace began. “He is a true warrior. I want to thank him for the opportunity. This was a big experience for me.” With Munguia’s future in the sport looking murky, the best next step is a rematch. “Middleweight is my true weight class,” Surace said. “But we’ll see if [a rematch] can happen.”

That said, it appears Jaime Munguia fell victim to one lucky punch, but he will have to prove that’s all it was with a rematch. Otherwise, things aren’t looking great for the Mexican boxer. What are your thoughts on the fight? Do you think Munguia needs a new trainer?
