Is Jake Paul worthy enough to become a world champion? Are his callouts to elite fighters like Canelo Alvarez and Conor McGregor justified? The ‘Problem Child’ has added many notable names from the combat sports world to his win column. However, there is one significant grouse that the boxing community has towards him – he hasn’t faced any elite boxers yet for him to be taken seriously in the professional circuit.

Safe to say, Jake Paul has been careful with his choice of opponents. Most of the fighters he faced were not in their prime or crossed over from the UFC. When he did face a boxer close to his age, Tommy Fury,  he suffered his career’s only defeat. All in all, many question marks need to be addressed before he can be considered a serious contender to become world champion. On the contrary, former UFC fighter and combat analyst Chael Sonnen feels Jake has done enough to warrant a showdown with the two biggest names in combat sports.

Does Paul’s boxing record deserve high praise?

On one of the episodes for his YouTube channel, UFC Hall of Famer appreciated Jake Paul’s boldness in calling out Mexican boxing superstar Canelo, and UFC sensation Conor McGregor. More so, he liked that Paul had been consistent in his callouts, trying to convince the two elite fighters to take the bait.

“He might have started this, calling out Canelo. He might started this, calling out C0nor McGregor. He is in the middle or even towards the end of this experiment, and he is still calling out Canelo and he is still calling out McGregor,” Sonnen highlighted.

However, then came the shocking remark! Sonnen claimed that Jake Paul has a better boxing record than Canelo Alvarez and Conor McGregor. “From the time that he started calling out Canelo or McGregor, in the fights that they’ve won and lost, Jake actually has a better record than Canelo and McGregor either separately or combined,” the former UFC fighter said.

In 2021, Jake Paul put Canelo Alvarez and Conor McGregor on his hit list. Since then, Canelo has suffered only one loss in his career against light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol and defended his undisputed super-middleweight status against elite boxers like Gennadiy Golovkin and Jermell Charlo. On the other hand, McGregor suffered two back-to-back defeats against Dustin Poirier in 2021 and has since been out of action after breaking his leg in the rematch against ‘The Diamond’. Meanwhile, ‘The Problem Child’ has a 10-1 boxing record, and his only loss came against Tommy Fury in 2023. Most of his bouts were against retired MMA fighters or semi-retired boxers .

What’s more, Sonnen was impressed that Jake Paul lost 38 pounds to make weight for his fight against Mike Perry. The 47-year-old analyst claimed that Canelo or Conor McGregor would never lose that amount of weight to make a fight. “You would never see Canelo lose 38 pounds to fight somebody. You would never see Conor lose 38 pounds to fight somebody.” Sonnen pointed out, emphasizing that it wasn’t ridiculous that Jake Paul was calling out such elite fighters.

Nonetheless, before Paul takes on Conor or Canelo, he will be clashing against ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ Mike Tyson.

Ahead of the fight, which was rescheduled to November 15 from July 20 due to Tyson’s medical scare, Paul said during the Perry post-fight presser, “Yeah, if Tyson wants to get in the ring, I am down. He does, so here we are. He is one of the baddest man on the planet and if he wants the opportunity or that smoke, he is the one who is like, ‘let’s make this a pro fight, I am going to end you’. And I am ready for it, I am excited for it. And. he’s a beat. He is very dangerous. “

The boxing community is worried about Mike Tyson’s health as there is a 30+ age difference between the fighters. Nonetheless, the 58-year-old Tyson is keen on the challenge and vows to “kill” Paul inside the ring. Do you think Jake Paul should be considered a legitimate world title contender in boxing?
