“I’m ready for the big leagues…I’m on the road to world champion. Hey, Canelo — stop ducking. I know you want it.” That is how Jake Paul challenged Canelo Alvarez, after the first-round TKO win over Ryan Bourland in March last year. And, how did the Mexican star react? “Maybe in two years we can talk,” declared the undisputed super middleweight champ, treating the YouTuber-turned-boxer like a background bluster. But guess what?

Serious fight negotiations were in place, with a showdown set for May 3rd in Las Vegas. However, Cinnamon pulled the bait and switch when he signed a giant $400 million four-fight deal with Turki Alalshikh for the Riyadh Season, ditching Paul’s $150 million. Left with no choice, El Gallo moved on after being left at the altar—not literally. Well, he now seems to be happy going into the scheduled bout with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the son of legendary Mexican boxer JCC Sr., on July 28 in Anaheim. Now, 2 days ago, Paul-founded MVP Promotions dropped an uncut video in their YouTube series. It does so every time he’s about to have a bout.

The nearly 11-minute movie-like edit opened up with the 28-year-old and his team’s workout on a field track. In between, there were clips injected where the Cleveland native spoke of his upcoming fight. Chavez Jr. has the opportunity to stop my career in its tracks. I just came off of the biggest fight in boxing history,” the 11-1 boxer reflected, referencing his Mike Tyson fight. In my opinion, what makes Chavez a dangerous fighter is his experience, his toughness, his cardio…They’re saying that this is the hardest he’s ever been training…A focused, experienced veteran and a former world champion like him is definitely a force to be reckoned with,” The Problem Child continued, noting his opponent’s expertise advantage.

But then, sitting beside his training ring, Paul sent a clear warning to the 54-6 boxer. On June 28th, people can expect to see my best performance—to do what Canelo couldn’t do: stop Chavez and shock the world again. What will they say after I beat a former world champion and the son of the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?” the heavyweight teased his haters confidently. On fight night, the version of Jake that you’re going to see is my best performance yet.”

With just that one line, he pretty much summed up that he’s not going to be in the ring just to be present. He’s going to show what his best looks like. The way I match up with Chavez stylistically—I’m going to put on a boxing classic, pick him apart, and people are going to be able to see the skill set that I’ve been working on in the gym, that I haven’t been able to showcase in recent fights yet,” Paul continued. So, it’s clear that no matter how unaccepted he is in the sport, the Dorado resident is looking for a win.

Boxing insiders back up Jake Paul’s stance in the sport

Once he was done talking, you could see some of the clips from his sparring sessions. Later on, the video continued with Paul flying from his training hub, Puerto Rico, to Los Angeles in his private jet, to attend the first face-off with Chavez Jr., which happened 6 days ago. In the same uncut video, an interviewer asked the Mexican some questions after he arrived at the venue. While Chavez looked boastful of his experience and image in the boxing community, Jake Paul answered some of the same questions realistically.

“Chávez Jr. is still more skilled than anyone Jake Paul has ever fought?” asked the interviewer. To which, both Paul and Chavez Jr. replied with an immediate yes. So, the influencer-boxer is well aware of what he’s gotten himself into. More than eight minutes into the video, Paul started speaking about his resume. The fights he has fought and the boxers he has defeated. Apart from the obvious mention of Tyson, he also slid in how he had beaten legends like Tyron Woodley and Anderson Silva.

Following Paul, Nakisa Bidarian, his promoter and the co-founder of MVP, continued to beat the same drum. He has the best résumé of any fighter who has 13 fights—amateur and pro combined—together. Look at who Chávez Jr. fought in his 10th, 12th, 14th fight, including his amateur period. Nothing compares to what this young man is doing,” said Bidarian. Close to the end of the video, Paul openly took the opportunity to talk about his opponent’s gameplay. “He has a lot of holes in his defense and doesn’t really use his jab, reserves the right hand,” he said critically. “His best punch is a hook, and he’s got a slower pace than he used to. So there’s just a lot of holes in his game that we’re going to expose.”

What’s your perspective on:

Can Jake Paul really do what Canelo couldn't and stop Chavez Jr. in his tracks?

Have an interesting take?

Lastly, the video tried to end on Paul’s impressive choice of opponents, backed by comments from Oscar De La Hoya playing in the background. You see, 6 days ago, the chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions was in the Power 106 Los Angeles radio room, speaking to the hosts. When Jake Paul’s topic came up, De La Hoya was just appreciative of how far the YouTuber has come in the sport. I think Jake Paul’s one of the hardest workers…in the gym…Now he’s fighting Chávez Jr.—an ex-world champion that went the distance with Canelo. So it’s like Jake Paul’s creeping up little by little, and a lot of people hate it. But that’s why he’s so popular—’cause they watch. And so imagine if Jake Paul knocks out Chávez Jr.—then what?
