One of this weekend’s major boxing cards headlined by the WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo and challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko will take place inside the Mohegan Sun Arena, Connecticut. The bout will be a 12-round contest for Charlo’s middleweight title. With both the fighters promising to deliver, here are a couple of scenarios that could play out during the fight.

Jermall Charlo (30-0, 22 KOs), has said he will look to deliver a knockout against the Ukrainian boxer. Derevyanchenko (13-2, 10 KOs), although having 2 losses on his record, is yet to be stopped in his professional career.

Charlo, being the undefeated champion, will most likely be the favorite going into this bout. However, the challenger has hung in there with the very best and definitely can cause a massive upset.

Derevyanchenko’s record might be misleading. This is because both of his professional losses have come against pound-for-pound elite boxers like Daniel Jacobs and Gennadiy Golovkin. His defeat to Jacobs was a close split decision, and he came out on the wrong end of a highly controversial decision against Golovkin.

What are the advantages and disadvantages for Jermall Charlo and Sergiy Derevyanchenko going into this bout?

Charlo is the faster and arguably the stronger of the two, but, he is yet to face the level of competition of his opponent. This bout is expected be his toughest challenge to date.

Going into the fight, Charlo will be the taller boxer and will have a significant reach advantage. Thus, he will look to land one of his perfectly timed uppercuts in the early rounds to score a quick knockdown. Derevyanchenko should be careful so as to not rush in hastily as he might get caught. A 10-8 round might influence the outcome should the bout go the distance.

If Derevyanchenko sticks to his plan and does not play into his opponents’ game, he could very well win the contest using his experience. This fight, although tough, will not be his toughest as he has faced higher caliber fighters in the past.

Charlo will look to make a statement in this bout. He will throw hard shots in attempting to knock Derevyanchenko out. This might work against him in the later rounds if Derevyanchenko survives the early onslaught. Therefore, he must be careful with his energy expenditure. With Derevyanchenko going the distance with some of the hardest hitters in the division, stopping him would be a mammoth task for Charlo.
