The boxing world is filled with stories of an underdog coming up against a dominant champion and claiming astounding success. Last night, another such story emerged, which will surely earn its place among boxing’s greatest against-the-odds triumphs. This occurred when Jessica McCaskill stunned the world in her first fight at welterweight.

 She came up against the undefeated and seemingly unconquerable Cecilia Brækhus in a fight for the WBC, WBO, IBO, The Ring, and IBF welterweight titles.

CasKILLA’ claimed the unanimous decision victory after ten back-and-forth rounds. This was her ninth professional boxing win. Further, she has eclipsed her previous championship wins against Erica Farias and Anahi Esther Sanchez.

Jessica McCaskill will put boxing first after her title win

Following her seismic victory, the investment banker cum boxer McCaskill touched on her struggles in reaching the pinnacle of female welterweight boxing. She said, “This is for the fourth-grade homeless Jessica. This is for the little girl that just didn’t care what people thought about her and learned to love herself, even though she was really weird.”

She also hinted at focusing on her boxing career full time as she said, “And for the me now that sacrifices everything to put this sport first and make a difference.”

38-year-old Cecilia Brækhus had been undefeated ever since she turned professional as a 25-year-old. Her stellar start saw her earn a title fight against Vini Skovgaard where she claimed the WBA and WBC belts. Later, she added the WBO and IBF titles against Victoria Cisneros and Ivana Habazin, respectively. 

Presently, McCaskill holds the super lightweight titles too, besides the five belts she claimed against.

In her post-fight speech, she hinted at fighting the undefeated Katie Taylor. ‘CasKILLA’ and Taylor have a history with the Irish pugilist winning their previous match. This is McCaskill’s only blemish in a championship fight.

Fans aren’t aware if she will defend titles in two divisions or stick to welterweight where she announced herself to the world. For now, though, her entire focus will be on celebrating her monumental triumph.
