Joseph Diaz, the former super featherweight world champion, was destined to become a great boxer. Despite starting off as a baseball player in childhood, ‘JoJo’ found success when he laced up the boxing gloves and became one of the best on his stage. The 29-year-old is now a top-tier boxer and is close to becoming a two-division titlist.

Diaz started off boxing at the reported age of 11 and never had to turn back. Today he is one of the finest in the lightweight division and is already bagging the biggest available fights. However, it hasn’t been an easy path for him. He actually left boxing within months after first getting into it at the age of 8.

To embrace boxing as a full-timer, Joseph Diaz had to bid a painful farewell to baseball. Here’s a broader look at how he entered into pugilism, and more about his boxing chain.

In which gym does Joseph Diaz train?

Per ESPN, Diaz’s father took him to the South El Monte Teamsters Youth Boxing Club at a very early age. The prime motive of that was to prepare Diaz for any scuffle and to defend himself. While he was primarily honed to defend, a young Diaz showed impressive progress in the gym. That’s when his life changed.

Diaz Sr. recalled it and said, “He ended up sparring a couple kids, and one kid he sparred, he made him bleed and stuff like that. After that, he got hooked. It kind of backfired on me a little bit.”

“I thought he would go in there and get beat up a little bit and not want to do this [too seriously] and just want to go in there and train. But he ended up making some kids bleed and beat some kids up.”

Today, Diaz has amassed an active resume of 32-1-1 with a super featherweight world title and the Interim lightweight title under his name. He has claimed 15 of those wins via stoppage and is a terror to his contemporaries.

Who is Joseph Diaz’s head coach and who are his sparring partners?

Joseph Diaz Sr. has reportedly trained his son Jr. all his life. In September, WBC recognized Sr, as a high-profile trainer and offered him a custom-made WBC strap. Interim titlist of the time, Diaz Jr. also attended the event with his own son.
