British World champions Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury have been teasing a potential encounter between each other for months now. Both Fury and Joshua are speculated to have their respective opponents in Deontay Wilder and Kubrat Pulev by the end of this year. However, that still doesn’t rule out the possible matchup between them.

Fury and Joshua have successfully cemented themselves as two of the greatest heavyweight boxers from the modern era, and a heavyweight clash between them has always been a fantasy fight for the fans. Several boxing greats have also been frequent in taking their respective sides in the much-awaited ‘Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua’ debate.

Meanwhile, former World champion boxer Bernard Hopkins has made his call, and it is quite surprising for the boxing fanbase. Hopkins, 55, believes that both the men have fair chances of winning the encounter. However, Hopkins appeared to be favoring Anthony Joshua slightly more.

Bernard Hopkins favors Anthony Joshua over Tyson Fury

“It will be an interesting, exciting five or six rounds at the beginning. Then Joshua’s athleticism, boxing IQ, and experience would overwhelm Fury. Joshua would come out of a dust-storm based on his experience,” Bernard Hopkins said.

“At this point, he has to make a really serious statement based on Redemption. This fight is Joshua’s stamp of approval of being great. He’s not there yet. He is in legacy-building mode,” Hopkins added.

As per Bernard Hopkins, Anthony Joshua knows the price of a defeat and it would benefit him severely against Fury. WBA (super), IBF, IBO, WBO Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua lost his titles midway in a major upset against Andy Ruiz Jr on June 1, 2019.

However, Joshua reclaimed the titles by vanquishing Ruiz Jr on December 7, 2019, in the re-match. Taking note of that contest, Hopkins said,  “Because of the lesson that he (Anthony Joshua) learned to be not unprepared, but overconfident he paid a big price. He redeemed himself.

“Now that is in his memory – what not to do ever again – Joshua beats Fury by knockout late.”

The rivalry between ‘The Gypsy King’ and ‘AJ’ has always been prominent. That said, both of them have often bashed each other publicly on several interviews. Since Fury is yet to taste a defeat in his pro career, he has seemingly been the ‘favorite’ in the possible matchup against Joshua for the fans.

However, that doesn’t rule out the fact that a heavyweight battle between them would be a hard call. Both Fury and Joshua have grabbed their world titles, coming from a controversial draw and defeat, respectively. Thus, the Brit duo can present a modern-day classic by unifying their world titles at this point.
