Rising welterweight sensation, Vergil Ortiz Jr, has shared his long-term goals in the sport. The undefeated fighter said he wants more than just being the champion and has hinted at fighting the best fighters in the division.
Ortiz Jr has a perfect record of 16-0 with 16 knockouts. Thus, he has earned his knockout artist status. However, the young prospect has no plans of slowing down despite his early success.
Speaking to BoxingScene Ortiz Jr said, “Everyone yearns to become a world champion, however I want to be remembered, I want people to remember who I am and the impact I left above the ring.”
The American added, “I want to become an undisputed champion, I want to get all the belts and I want to fight against the best.”
These comments not only showed his desire to make the big fights, but also reaffirmed his confidence in his ability to take on the top fighters in the division.
The welterweight division is one of the most exciting divisions in the sport right now. The belt holders, Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford are both undefeated, while legendary Manny Pacquiao holds the last belt. Therefore, it would take someone special to dethrone them to become undisputed.
However, Ortiz Jr believes he has what it takes and is working towards it. “I don’t want easy fights. I train very hard and I suffer a lot in training camps, I want to face the best, I want to raise my level and show what I am capable of,” said Ortiz Jr.
The 22-year-old’s record speaks for itself. He has all the tools to go to the top. Furthermore, by the time he challenges for the title, both Crawford and Spence Jr could be on the decline, which could increase his chances.
However, the welterweight division has always been one of the most exciting in the sport. There are always talented boxers in this division that can beat the champion. So Ortiz Jr will have to hope that his power can separate him from the rest as he strives to become an undisputed champion.
