Oscar De La Hoya is a former professional boxer and a boxing promoter. He competed and won 11 world titles in six weight classes, including the lineal championship in three weight classes. De La Hoya is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time. He is also the founder of Golden Boy Promotions, a combat sports promotional firm.

Then, the reporter asked his thoughts on Mark Wahlberg, who is arguably one of the greatest actors ever, doing a documentary about him. Now, Wahlberg is himself a combat sports fan, and one time he even lauded Vasiliy Lomachenko for his performance against Masayoshi Nakatani.

So the reporter asked De La Hoya if he’s got the chance to see the documentary yet. Oscar De La Hoya made a witty joke, “Well the only thing I can say about it is that Oscar’s gonna win an Oscar, it’s that good. It’s incredible, it’s amazing, yeah.”

He went further and said, “It’s very uh- it’s heartfelt, it’s inspirational. I talk about the downs, the lows, the highs, it’s one that it’s gonna inspire, I believe. But most importantly, it’s gonna set me free. It’s so authentic, you know. So I talk about everything, it’s pretty cool.

Well, this is not the first documentary about Oscar De La Hoya, as in the past year itself, there was a documentary about De La Hoya’s fight with another famous Mexican boxer. And now, in the very next year, there’s another documentary in making, which could get released this year too. Well, how many boxers can say that they’ve had two documentaries made about them in two consecutive years?

De La Hoya asked Bastón, his friend of 20 years, to direct a documentary about the fight. At first, Bastón was hesitant, but then she was inspired to delve into the cultural issues that the fight brought to the surface, with Chávez representing Mexico and De La Hoya representing East Los Angeles.

The film features interviews with Chávez, De La Hoya, his Mexican trainer Jesus Rivero, as well as academics and observers who discuss the cultural divide then and now. Despite challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bastón managed to complete the film and form a strong bond with Chávez.
