Why did Coca-Cola stop endorsing Mike Tyson?

Mike Tyson appeared in an interview with VlaTv last year and shared that during his younger days, his coach and mentor, Cus D’ Amato, wanted Tyson to be an exciting boxer, which made the former champ aggressive.

I wanted to be very exciting. Cus designed my style to be very exciting. That was my main objective because you know there were guys that had long title defenses and held the title for a long time, but you know nobody would come to see their fight. They were boring. So he wanted to make sure that I was exciting,” Tyson told the reporter.

Moreover, Iron Mike then went on to reveal that he took it a step far one time which led to Coca-Cola and Kodak dropping him, “Sometimes I took it too far and I was talking about punching somebody’s nose and brain in the nose and then all the good Kodak commercials just stopped. Those Kodak commercials and those Coca-Cola commercials I used to have them making, and they just stopped,” said Tyson.

The reporter then asked Tyson whether D’Amato was with him during this time and the champ responded, “I don’t think he was, but that’s what me and Cus talked about.”

During his prime, Tyson was notorious for intimating his opponents not only physically but also verbally, which affected the boxer’s image in a negative way, eventually leading to brands not endorsing him.

A look into Tyson’s relationship with Cus D’ Amato

As far as Mike Tyson was concerned, the relationship between him and Cus D’Amato was very special. D’Amato took Tyson into his home when he was just 13 years old, pulling him off the streets to coach and mentor him almost exclusively. Moreover, D’Amato was the one who predicted that Tyson would become the youngest heavyweight champion in the world. A feat that Tyson accomplished by becoming the champ at just 20-year-old.

D’Amato put all of his energy into Tyson believing in him, which made the pair an unstoppable force to be reckoned with. Moreover, at the height of their work together with Kevin Rooney, Iron Mike was arguably the best heavyweight on the planet.
