Gervonta Davis going unpunished for the knee he took in the 9th round against Lamont Roach Jr. last month might be the most baffling decision in recent times in boxing. Referee Steve Willis’s choice to neither count it as a knockdown nor dock a point from Davis for running to his corner has left many scratching their heads.

For the past month, fans and analysts haven’t stopped buzzing about the refereeing blunder. Even NYSAC in their response to Roach’s appeal reiterated the same point. Most agree that under the rules, if a knockdown had been called, Roach would’ve won the fight and the title. However, as things stand, Tank not only retained his title but even kept his undefeated streak. Now, Mike Tyson has weighed in with his take, and it’s one that the Baltimore native might not be too happy to hear.

Mike Tyson calls out the blunder

In a recent episode of Sports Illustrated, ’10 Burning Questions With Mike Tyson,’ one question for Iron Mike was: “Should a point have been taken from Tank for the knee vs. Roach?” The 58-year-old has been a big fan of Gervonta Davis and even declared him “the face of boxing” back in 2023. However, he kept his biases aside and replied, “Yeah, the point should have been taken away.” Tyson dismissed Davis’s excuse about the grease in his eyes, adding, “Regardless of what’s in his eyes, he did the knee, took the knee,” he stated.

He also slammed referee Steve Willis for the oversight, insisting on a point deduction or “whatever the rule called for,” he concluded. This, coming from one of Tank’s biggest supporters, must sting. It ramps up the pressure on him for a convincing win in the proposed June rematch.

However, this time, things won’t be that easy. Gervonta Davis has gone from being the absolute favorite to being seen by many as the underdog. At least that is what the undefeated featherweight prospect Julian Gonzalez thinks.

Gervonta Davis not the favorite anymore

Julian Gonzalez, the featherweight phenom with a 16-0 record, recently sat down with YSM Sports Media to share his prediction on the Tank-Roach rematch. “They’re both going to come ready again,” he said, anticipating another explosive showdown.

However, in a surprising revelation, Gonzalez revealed that he had picked Roach as the favorite in the first fight as well. “The first one was a tough one too. I think I had Lamont Roach. I’m not going to lie,” he added. However, he didn’t mind the draw and was happy with the decision. For the second fight as well, he is sticking with his pick. “I’mma rock with Lamont though, it’s hard. Lamont surprised me a lot, so I’m with Lamont,” he added.

Only time will tell how the fight will turn out. However, if Gervonta Davis comes to the fight with the same motivation, Lamont Roach won’t forgive him this time. He’ll be gunning to snag the WBA lightweight title that slipped away unfairly the first time around.
