Mike Tyson will forever remain one of the most iconic faces in the sport of boxing. And, it can be rightfully said that his trainer Cus D’Amato had a major role in molding him into one of the most decorated heavyweights of all time. In fact, Tyson recently opened up about D’Amato’s contributions to his life. And about almost missing out on the Junior Olympics in 1981.

12 Rounds with Tyson‘ is the latest self-development program that Tyson released. And, it is said that he wishes to help people become a lot more successful in life through the program.

On the site, he spoke about the relationship he shared with D’Amato. He said, “Cus became the father figure I never had. When my mom passed away, he stepped in and legally adopted me. And he built me into the ultimate fighting machine.”

Tyson further mentioned that D’Amato prepared him for the fight within. And also taught him to conquer his mind. He said, “Up until that point, I’d already been arrested 38 times. I was emotionally unstable. Yet within weeks, Cus programmed in me the killer instinct.”

He even gave an example of the time when he was preparing for the Junior Olympics. Tyson said, “My footwork was a mess. I wanted to withdraw from the fight. That’s when Cus told me the great conquerors of history used adversity as fuel.”

D’Amato also helped Tyson use his struggles as a driving force for success.

Cus D’Amato was 22 when he opened the Empire Sporting Club. And later went on to manage the careers of multiple Hall of Fame inductees like Mike Tyson, Floyd Patterson, and Jose Torres.

Tyson, on the other hand, was in a juvenile detention home when he was noticed by Bobby Stewart. And was later introduced by him to D’Amato. Moreover, D’Amato saw potential in Tyson and took him under his wing. He even went on to legally adopt the young Tyson.

While D’Amato was only alive for the first few years of Tyson’s life, it can be said that he was that one individual who made him the unstoppable force that he was.
