The Nevada State Athletic Commission has backed the panel of referees who made the controversial decision on the Franco-Moloney fight.  The referee stopped the fight to check a suspected accidental headbutt on Joshua Franco by Andrew Moloney.

The boxing community did not agree with the decision and expressed their extreme dismay at the delay it took to make the decision.

The two were fighting on the Terence Crawford vs Kell Brook card as the co-main event. They were battling it out for the WBA super-flyweight belt.

The fight was stopped to check a suspected accidental head-butt which caused severe swelling on Joshua Franco’s right eye. Franco Claimed that Moloney had head-butted him, while the Aussie was adamant that he had not.

Lance Pugmire from The Athletic, said he spoke to the Nevada State Athletic Commission representative Bob Bennett, who defended the decision to call the fight a no contest.

He also expressed his dismay at all the hate he received from fans, especially for the delay in making the decision. Pugmire also spoke to a regulator from Nevada.

His opinion was that the fractured eye socket proves that it was the right decision. Even saying, “You ever see a super-flyweight throw a jab and fracture an eye socket? You think that comes from punches.”

What’s next for Joshua Franco and Andrew Moloney?

After the fight, Andrew Moloney was visibly disdained with the whole situation. He started the fight on the front foot and felt he had a very good chance of winning the belt.

This was meant to be a cracking fight since it was the second time these warriors met in the ring. Thus, the decision caused a lot of frustration among fans.

With it ending in the way it did, we will surely see a trilogy between these two. And despite not being global stars, it is safe to say the trilogy fight will get a lot of viewers.
