Errol Spence Jr. still commands a loyal fan base eagerly awaiting his return to the ring. However, with each passing day, the prospects of a comeback seem to grow dimmer. Questions about his health, motivation, and long-term plans have only fueled speculation. Now, boxing insider Rick Glaser has weighed in with a significant update, shedding new light on what might lie ahead for the former unified welterweight champion in the sport.

‘The Truth’ hasn’t stepped into the ring since his punishing defeat to two-division undisputed champion Terence Crawford in July 2023. Although there was speculation about a potential showdown with WBC and WBO super welterweight titleholder Sebastian Fundora last year, that bout appears to be off the table, with Fundora reportedly exploring other options. While Errol Spence Jr. has publicly dismissed talk of retirement, recent rumors addressed by Rick Glaser suggest otherwise.

Has Errol Spence Jr. retired?

Since the proposed Fundora fight fell through, Keith Thurman has taken it upon himself to reignite his rivalry with Errol Spence Jr. After a victory over Brock Jarvis earlier this year, the former welterweight champion was widely expected to face Australia’s Tim Tszyu but chose to keep his options open—and threw down the gauntlet by calling out Spence Jr. for a showdown. However, there’s still no update on whether that fight will come to fruition. With little clarity on Spence’s next move, Rick Glaser took to X a few days ago to address the swirling rumors surrounding Spence Jr.’s future. “Rumors abound, Errol Spence has thought better than to fight again,” he wrote. “It’s going to be a drift into retirement scenario. If true, his final boxing record stands at 28-1, 22 KOs, and 7-1 in world title bouts. A great resume. Let’s hope it’s true for Errol’s long-term health. Best regards to Errol.”

Throughout his career, Spence Jr. has battled significant health challenges, including a serious car accident in 2019, a retinal tear in 2021, and another car accident in 2022—not to mention the mental toll of his devastating loss to Crawford.

It didn’t take long for fans to join the conversation, sending their well wishes to Spence Jr. as speculation about his future continues.

Is retirement the right path for Spence Jr.?

Since Glaser’s post, hundreds of comments have poured in—most offering support, while others were more skeptical. One user expressed hope that the rumors were true, thanking Spence for his contributions to the sport. “I hope it is true, he’s done. He was dang good at his peak, I enjoyed watching him,” the user wrote. But there’s a small chance Spence can come back, though it would be a surprise, to say the least.

Another user bid farewell to one of boxing’s biggest stars, highlighting his health. “He’s made enough money to do so with his health in tack, considering what he’s been through. His performances were all entertaining, and we salute him for what he’s given to the sport of boxing,” the user commented. Errol Spence Jr., a former unified welterweight champion, held the IBF, WBC, and WBA titles, showcasing elite skill and resilience despite significant health setbacks.

The next user agreed, sharing their take on Spence’s retirement. “I think 🤔 retirement would be the best option for him after the beating Crawford gave him, not many can come back from that unless it was at a lower level, only thing I can say is Crawford ended him lol 😜,” the user wrote. Interestingly, Spence Jr. had the option to activate his rematch clause after losing to Crawford, but he didn’t—this says a lot about Spence’s loss.

Meanwhile, this user felt it’s not over for the 35-year-old. “Spence should fight again to see where he’s at. He truly should, cuz 1 fight doesn’t and shouldn’t define your career. Especially losing to the best boxer in the world,” the user commented. Crawford is often described as the best of this generation, but if Spence Jr. really had it in him, he could have fought someone by now.

While everyone discussed whether Spence should retire or not, one user highlighted an issue with retired boxers these days. “[The] issue for fighters is not retiring. It’s staying retired,” the user commented. Manny Pacquiao is set to come out of retirement as well for a title fight against Mario Barrios on July 19, 2025.

That said, it appears rumors suggest Errol Spence Jr. has hung up his gloves for good. However, people familiar with the boxing landscape know nothing is set in stone. Do you think Spence should retire? Or should he give boxing one more shot?
