Floyd Mayweather is undoubtedly one of the richest boxers in the history of the sport. His love for money persuaded him to even keep his nickname as “Money Mayweather”. His nickname prior to that was “Pretty Boy”.

Mayweather has used his talent inside the boxing ring to earn a lot of money in his career. Today, after 21 years of boxing professionally, he continues to have exhibition fights wherein he earns millions of dollars.

In many interviews throughout his career, he talks about his love for money and how he spends it. Recently a clip on the internet resurfaced in which he explained his reason behind earning money.

Floyd Mayweather on why money is so important

Prior to the Mayweather-McGregor boxing bout, Mayweather did an interview with a famous boxing journalist Jim Gray. He was very candid about the answers he gave ahead of his last professional bout.

Considering the connection he has with money, Gray asked him a very profound question.

He asked, “Why is money so important for you?”.  To which Mayweather responded, “Why not? I mean everything you own cost money.”

When further asked if that’s how he measures his success, he responded, “No. I’m Loyal, Honest and I am a good person and I call a spade a spade and without money I would be same person”.

Money is a big motivator for Floyd and it is his desire to earn money that boosted his net worth to be around more than a billion dollars. 

How does Mayweather spend his money?

Floyd has been on top of Forbes highest paying athletes for many years while he was competing. He was one of the first few boxers who showcased that it is possible to be an active boxer and make money by promoting your own events.

Now that he has achieved the fruits of his hard work, he does not shy away from spending his money the way he wants. Rather, he is known for how lavishly he spends his money on a regular basis.
