Speaking to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, Joshua said, “I realize that no one lives in my head rent-free. Tyson Fury doesn’t live in my head, Deontay Wilder doesn’t live in my head. I’m working hard, paying my own rent, so I’m just focused on myself. Whether people call Tyson number one is down to public opinion.”

The Londoner also spoke about how he can become number one by focusing on himself. He said, “the only way to prove who is number one and to not leave it to public opinion is to get us in the ring. And that’s why the fight with Pulev is important, because it’s a banana skin. So I have to go in there, perform, do a good job. And then that would lead me towards proving who is number one.”
The champion then went on to reaffirm his mindset. He confirmed that he was unconcerned about what the other heavyweights were doing and said, “I’m worried about Pulev. I’m not worried about Tyson Fury being number one at the minute. I just got to focus on myself at the minute; and then, as long as I do that, I’ll get the opportunity to prove who’s number one in the division.”

How important is the Pulev fight for Anthony Joshua?
The Englishman has to get past his next fight and make a statement to the heavyweight division. This is his first fight after the Andy Ruiz Jr rematch and the champion will have to assert his dominance on the division. If he can win this fight, that sets things up perfectly for a fight against Tyson Fury in 2021.
