After months of uncertainty, it is still unclear who the pound-for-pound king, Canelo Alvarez, is going to face in 2022. Notably, 2021 was definitely the year of boxing stalwart Canelo Alvarez. Within 11 months, he cleared the super-middleweight division by outclassing established pugilists like Billy Joe Saunders, Callum Smith, Rocky Fielding, Avni Yildirim, and Caleb Plant.

Canelo, after getting crowned as the undisputed super-middleweight champion, the Mexican made it clear in a post-fight wager that he is shifting his momentum to the new weight division. This sent the boxing world into a frenzy and since then social media is buzzing with speculations of Canelo’s next opponent and grabbing public attention.

Recently, social media platforms were flooded with rumors that the Mexican star will face the Russian pugilist, Dmitry Bivol, and later on the Kazakh stalwart, Gennady Golovkin.

However, Canelo Alvarez‘s coach Eddy Reynoso turned down all such speculations. According to Michael Benson, the renowned trainer said, “Good afternoon, I am grateful to communicate that there are offers for Canelo’s next fight from PBC and Matchroom. The negotiation process is still a work in progress.”

“A final decision has not been reached. As of now, all information published yesterday has no truth or foundation behind it. Once we have a signed agreement, our team will be the first to notify the public.”

Notably, Canelo is looking to garner more accolades as he seems all focussed on moving to cruiserweight to face more big pugilists.

Potential opponents for Canelo Alvarez

Earlier, Canelo Alvarez was supposed to challenge the WBC champion, Ilunga Makabu, in May as they attended a media event together. But eventually, this potential clash seemed far from turning into a reality.

In the current scenario, the most potential opponent above Ilunga Makabu is the unified middleweight world champion, Jermall Charlo. He is undefeated and may prove a tough opponent and fans around the world want a blistering bout. Mike Coppinger, the boxing insider, said, “I’m not so sure that Canelo [Alvarez] will be fighting at cruiserweight or against [Ilunga] Makabu. I’m hearing that it’s much more likely that he’s going to fight Jermall Charlo on Cinco de Mayo. There are talks right now for that fight.”

Gennady Golovkin is also keen to face Canelo Alvarez and wants an iconic trilogy to come true. Golovkin, the two-time middleweight champion, has earlier faced Alvarez and proved him as the most dextrous opponent. He is the only fighter that went toe-to-toe with the pound-for-pound king. Alvarez faced his only defeat against Mayweather.

Interestingly, the fight between Canelo and GGG in 2018 was ‘The Fight of The Year. Therefore, GGG, the man with the ‘Titanium Chin’, is on the radar of Canelo and seemingly his next potential opponent.
