Oleksandr Usyk is on cloud nine at the moment! On May 18, 2024, Usyk beat the ‘Gypsy King’ Tyson Fury to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, the first to do it since Lennox Lewis in 2000. The win also made him the two-time undisputed champion of the world, previously winning all the titles at cruiserweight. Furthermore, the Ukrainian has yet to take a loss in his career. Is there anything else to prove for him? Safe to say, if he retires now at thirty-seven, he would go down in history as one of the P4P greats.

However, the slick Ukranian fighter feels he has more in his gas tank. Going against his mom’s wishes, the Ukrainian still feels there are a couple of years of boxing left in him. In a recent interview with Boxing King Media, the tricky southpaw fighter put to bed all the rumors about his life post-retirement.

You can have it all, but how much do you want it?

Lately, Boxing King Media caught up with Oleksandr Usyk to speak about his plans following the rematch with Tyson Fury on December 21, 2024. The interviewer asked Usyk how his phone call with his mother went following his win against Tyson Fury. She expressed the sentiment of many boxing fans who believe the Ukrainian has nothing else to prove in the sport. “My mama say enough,” informed Usyk. However, ‘The Cat’ remains steadfast in this commitment to continue boxing.

“Listen my mama not understand uh English, Mama I love you..um I going to continue boxing because I love boxing. I feel I have power,” Usyk said assertively. Even the Ukranian’s wife has come to terms with the fact that retirement might not be on the cards for him anytime soon. “My wife told me, ‘listen I know you you not stop boxing… never. You will go to competition uh training…but you not stop boxing’. I say yes I know, it’s my life.”

Earlier, the former undisputed heavyweight champion told Boxing Scene that he will continue to grace the squared circle with his presence for three more years. He further stated that his family and fans back in Ukraine keep him motivated to continue boxing. “Yes, of course. I am going to continue boxing. Maybe up to three more years. My motivation for fighting is discipline, family, and fans. I appreciate the support of the people and the Ukrainian soldiers,” he said.

There were rumors about Usyk possibly retiring after the Fury rematch, and switching lanes to MMA or Conor McGregor’s BKFC. But, by the looks of it, these possibilities have to wait for at least three more years.

Meanwhile, Uysk responded to Tyson Fury, claiming that their fight was “too easy” even though he suffered a split decision loss.

Was it “too easy”, really?

Usyk finally responded to the ‘Gypsy King’ claiming in an interview in June that at times he felt like he was “in there with a local amateur boxer”.

“Oh my god, no way! Okay, no problem. The next fight will be easy,” the two-time undisputed champion said sarcastically in an exclusive interview with Sky News.

However, Usyk admitted that the rematch against Fury would be “hard” for him, calling him a boxer with “good IQ”. Nevertheless, he fired off a warning to Fury ahead of their clash in December this year. “Tyson, don’t be afraid – I will not leave you alone,” he remarked.

Hopefully, these off-the-cuff statements from Fury don’t affect his training. If he was a wise man, Fury would be back to the drawing board, refining his technique to cope up with a pressure fighter like Usyk. Meanwhile, judging by his statements, Usyk will also be taking his upcoming fight seriously, as he will be looking to stop Fury from being the unified heavyweight champion.
