The plan for Oleksandr Usyk to conquer the heavyweight division has taken shape. The undefeated Ukrainian breezed through the cruiserweights and won every belt there was to win. Since then, he has moved up to heavyweight and said he wants to win everything at heavyweight. He even spoke about fighting Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Usyk’s K2 co-promoter Alexander Krassyuk gave an update on the plans to conquer the heavyweight division. The situation is a little complicated, though.

Anthony Joshua has chosen to fight Kubrat Pulev, who was IBF mandatory for two years. However, Oleksandr Usyk was also WBO mandatory for Joshua. Now, Joshua could fight Usyk after the Pulev fight but reports suggest he has agreed to a mega-fight against Tyson Fury.

Usyk himself has to get past his next fight against Derek Chisora for any of this to go through. It will be the Ukrainian’s first proper test at heavyweight. His promoter revealed three different options that they are considering. He said:

“Usyk has been the WBO mandatory challenger for more than one year. He has agreed to let AJ versus Pulev happen with regards that the winner fights him next. This statement is still solid.”

The co-promoter said, “Our plan is, A- Beat Dereck Chisora. B- Push AJ to comply with WBO rules or vacate the title. C- Defeat AJ (or any other WBO champion or contender) and become the heavyweight champion. Simple and practical.” This confirms that his team is not messing about with his next move.

What happens to Oleksandr Usyk if Anthony Joshua fights Tyson Fury before Usyk?

The complications arise when we consider that Anthony Joshua’s next fight will be against Tyson Fury. There have been rumors suggesting that a unification bout is on the horizon. In this situation, Usyk will ask Anthony Joshua to vacate the WBO title and fight Fury.

After that, Oleksandr Usyk will fight for the vacant WBO title and will fight the winner of the Fury-Joshua fight. That will give the division an undisputed champion and make all the fights possible.

Just going by this, we can see how exciting the heavyweight division is right now. And this is without considering other contenders like Dillian Whyte, Deontay Wilder, among others. If you’re a fight fan, keep your eyes peeled on the heavyweight division.
