The two-weight class champion Shakur Stevenson is one of the most hyped prospects on the way to becoming the glorious star in the sport of professional boxing. After clinching the silver medal in the Summer Olympics of 2016 for his country, he became a nationwide sensation.

For the uninitiated, the undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather cheered the young Newark pugilist during the Olympics. Interestingly, the former pound-for-pound boxer claimed, “I see the next Floyd Mayweather.”

However, boxing speculators had expected that the young pugilist might turn professional under the wings of ‘The Pretty Boy’. But it did not happen.

In a recent interview, the WBO junior lightweight champ Stevenson gave details on why he did not sign with Mayweather Promotions after the Olympic games.

The 24-year-old said, “I’m real ni**a, so like it’s just certain things that I tolerate and I don’t tolerate and it’s like I got around certain people that I felt was like real ni**as, and they kind of helped me out with my career. And Floyd Mayweather didn’t want to be involved in that. He wants to accept the real.”

“The real priority he wanted me to go through it with, I ain’t gonna. He wanted me to go through blind, but he wanted me to do it his way. I didn’t want to do it his way, so it ended be being, I did it my way. I went with the team I felt was like a better team for me and I feel like right now it’s paid off.”

Eventually, Stevenson signed with Top Ranks’ Bob Arum in 2017.
