Interim WBA super middleweight champion Caleb Plant is set to collide with Mexico’s Jose Armando Resendiz on May 31 at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas. But ahead of the bout, ‘Sweethands’ has taken aim at The Ring magazine’s updated super middleweight rankings—voicing his disapproval in no uncertain terms. In a fiery statement, Plant spared no one but Canelo Alvarez, making it clear who he believes truly belongs at the top.

You see, what happened is on May 9th, The Ring released its updated super middleweight rankings, placing undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez at the top. He was followed by Christian Mbilli, Diego Pacheco, Osleys Iglesias, Caleb Plant, Jaime Munguia, William Scull, Vladimir Shishkin, Bruno Surace, and Edgar Berlanga.

This didn’t seem to have sat well with Plant, who hasn’t fought anyone on the list besides Canelo, and quickly responded to the new rankings, writing, “Only one person on this [list] has done more, or accomplished more, than me and that’s Canelo. I [will] keep chipping away 🪵 🪓 more motivation.”

It’s worth noting that there were some talks of a fight between Berlanga and Plant, but those discussions came to a screeching halt when Berlanga seemed to refuse to fight Plant. It’s also worth noting that besides Canelo, Scull and Plant, none of the names on the rankings have held a major title from the four main sanctioning bodies.

Meanwhile, Plant is the former IBF super middleweight champion and is currently the interim WBA title holder, which he acquired by defeating Trevor McCumby in September last year. Regardless, Plant seems to be focused on continuing his ascent in the division with his upcoming fight.

Caleb Plant has his eyes set on the winner of the blockbuster showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford, scheduled for September 12 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. While Crawford and Plant have shared friendly moments in the past, business would take precedence if the Omaha native captures undisputed status at 168. “Yea,” Plant said when asked if a fight with Crawford makes sense. “I mean, all the top super-middleweights are on my radar. I wanna face the best.”

Before entering the title mix again, Plant must get through Jose Armando Resendiz on May 31, with Jermall Charlo possibly next. Still, the former IBF champion believes he’s proven his willingness to fight elite names. “A lot of fighters say that, but I don’t feel like a lot of them have shown and proved that,” Plant added. “I’ve shown and proved that.” Regardless of who wins in September, Plant plans to be ready.
