Golden Boy Promotion’s Oscar De La Hoya is back to hitting out at Canelo Alvarez. The two have shared a strained relationship ever since the Mexican filed a lawsuit against De La Hoya’s company. Since then, Golden Boy Promotions has freed Canelo Alvarez.

However, the war of words has not stopped there. Though Alvarez has seemingly moved on, the promoter cannot resist taking digs at him. So after Ryan Garcia’s impressive victory over Luke Campbell, De La Hoya was at it again.

Speaking to Mark Kriegel from ESPN, De La Hoya said, “I strongly feel that Ryan is going to be 10 times bigger than Canelo.”

This comment showed how highly the promoter rates ‘The Flash’. However, it also showed that he does not necessarily rate the Mexican’s achievements.

De La Hoya himself is a multi-weight world champion, so he knows a thing or two about success in the sport. Therefore, for him to predict such heights for Ryan Garcia showed just how big of a prospect Garcia is in the sport.

His victory over Luke Campbell answered a lot of questions about his ability. However, he is still only 22-years-old and is 21 fights into his career. So, is Oscar De La Hoya right in comparing him to Canelo Alvarez?

It’s too soon to say something as drastic as that. Canelo is a four-division world champion and has fought up to light-heavyweight. He has only ever lost to Floyd Mayweather, who many say is the greatest boxer of all time.

Hence, despite Garcia’s global fame and stature, it is difficult to see how he can match Canelo’s achievements in the sport right now. However, if he is promoted in the right way and managed well, maybe he could scale the heights Canelo did. Do you think Ryan Garcia has what it takes to become a multi-weight world champion?
