Over the past year, the sport of boxing has seen a major shift as many legends of the sport have returned. They have fought in exhibition bouts that have inspired some hotshots to return to the ring professionally. That said, Oscar De La Hoya is one of the top names in that list who is now all charged up to make his highly anticipated return to the squared circle.

‘Golden Boy’ will face the former UFC star, Vitor Belfort, in an 8-round pro-boxing bout on September 11th. This fight was earlier supposed to be an exhibition, but De La Hoya was hungry to make his return to the professional circuit. Given his eagerness, and perhaps that of his opponent as well, the former world champion has gotten his wish.
Mike Coppinger shared the news about this fight going down as pro-bout on his Twitter handle. He wrote, “The fight between @OscarDeLaHoya and @vitorbelfort will be just that – a fight. No longer an exhibition. 8 two-minute rounds at 180 pounds (+5).”

De La Hoya last fought in 2008. His concluding career bout was against Manny Pacquiao. Though ‘Golden Boy’ ended up with a lopsided defeat in this fight, he still left the sport in a high-regard and respect from the fans.

After signing off from the game, he did justice to his role as a promoter. But now, again, he’s ecstatic to fight under the big lights.

De La Hoya was one prominent technician of the sport during his prime. And in his vast boxing run, he confronted and beat countless skilled pugilists.

That said, he definitely holds the required expertise to be a boxing icon. However, he’ll have to get a hang of the ring and re-discover his form within the ropes in an actual match. Subsequently, he’ll have to make a good impression against Belfort for big names to consider calling him out.
