About a week ago, Premier Boxing Champions shared a promo for the upcoming fight between David Benavidez and David Morrell. It was supposed to hype up fans for the February 1st fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. However, what it really did was make ‘The Mexican Monster’ a laughing stock among fans.
You see, the Phoenix, Arizona native looked quite overweight and out of shape. While a bit of weight gain is expected since Benavidez is now a regular in the light heavyweight division, his fans relentlessly poked fun at his physique. Fast forward to today, the 27-year-old shared some pictures from his recent sparring session, but it appears people can’t still get over his physique.

David Benavidez sends threatening message to Morrell
With only months to go until he defends the interim WBC light heavyweight title, David Benavidez gave fans a glimpse into his preparation by sharing a series of photos on Instagram. The images captured him in the midst of an intense sparring session, sweat dripping and determination etched on his face.
Accompanying the post was a caption aimed squarely at his upcoming opponent, setting the tone for what promises to be an electrifying clash. “13 rounds for my second day of sparring,” Benavidez wrote. “I’m coming with everything for this one and Not leaving anything to chance.” However, what really represented his intention for the bout was what came after.

“Someone tell Morrell he’s in trouble,” Benavidez concluded. The fight is a pivotal moment for Benavidez, who was overlooked as an opponent for former undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. The winner in this fight has been promised a sure shot at the winner of newly crowned undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev.
All that aside, what fans seem to have gleaned from Benavidez’s latest social media post was his out-of-shape physique. And they made sure to let the interim WBC champion know in the comments of the post.

Benavidez compared to Tyson Fury
Benavidez’s hardcore fans would know he has always struggled with weight. So, it didn’t take long for this user to comment on Benavidez’s weight. “How did Benavidez get so big and sloppy? [He] has that Tyson Fury built,” the user commented. Tyson Fury is known to fight overweight—he often uses this weight to slow down and tire out his opponents during fights. However, whether Benavidez has such plans is unclear.
Another user suggested Benavidez was working hard in the gym to make people forget about the promo pictures of himself, where he looked overweight. “Bro gonna make us forget about them pictures at promo,” the user commented. Notably, Benavidez missed weight before his title defense against Roamer Alexis Angulo, which resulted in him getting stripped of the WBC super middleweight title in 2020.

Someone else suggested that Benavidez is on the brink of a harsh reality check. “He’s about to realize that he bit off way more than he can chew. @benavidez300,” the user wrote. If Benavidez comes in overweight, he will lose the title once again, and the potential to fight Beterbiev.

While there were several critiques, Benavidez also had support in the comments. Like Jake Paul’s former trainer BJ Flores, who motivated the 27-year-old. “Can’t wait champ. See you in Vegas,” Flores wrote. Interestingly, it will be Benavidez’s first fight at the T-Mobile Arena, and second for Morrell.

The next user also tried to motivate Benavidez for his upcoming bout. “Keep training hard. You will need it and much more to win this one,” the user commented. Morrell is not only undefeated and quickly rising in the ranks, but he also has quite a mature record.
That being said, it’s clear that fans are fixated on Benavidez’s physique, as he prepares for a difficult fight against David Morrell next year. It would be interesting to see what kind of shape he shows up in during the fight. Do you think Benavidez needs to worry about his weight?
