The lightweight division was rocked to its core on March 1, 2025, when Gervonta Davis clashed with Lamont Roach Jr. in a bout that defied all expectations. What was supposed to be another one-sided victory for ‘Tank’ turned out to be a slobber knocker as the duo fought to a controversial draw. The real shocker? Had the rules been strictly enforced, Davis might have lost his title.

In a pivotal moment late in the fight, the WBA lightweight champion dropped to a knee, citing grease from his hair, impairing his ability to fight. However, rather than declaring it a knockdown, as it should have, referee Steve Willis let the fight continue. The boxing world has been debating non-stop about Willis’s decision, wondering if it was the right call or a major blunder.

While the decision is completely on the referee’s conscience, a confirmed fact is that it must be the most painful moment of Gervonta Davis’s life. A man once considered the best lightweight, only escaped with his belt due to a referee error! It will take time for him to come to terms with the situation. However, as he grapples with the fallout, the rematch looms—one that Davis might not be eager to face. And now, reports have released the Barclays Center PPV number, providing a silver lining. These numbers might not only motivate the Baltimore native for the rematch but also ease the pain a bit.

Gervonta Davis with another record-breaking gate

On Tuesday, the X page ExposingBoxingMyths shared an audit of the event, debunking earlier claims about ticket sales. Earlier rumors suggested a complete sellout at the Barclays Center, with a capacity of 19,250. However, the audit paints a different picture.

The audit revealed that a total of 16,420 tickets were sold at the venue, with 766 complimentary tickets handed out. These are still very impressive numbers and a testament to Gervonta Davis’ draw as the event garnered $6,415,815.00 in gate sales. This is the second highest gate record for Barclays Center only topped by a Rolling Stone concert. Furthermore, the fight did well on PPV as well with 262,000 PPV buys, grossing around $21 million in pay-per-view revenue across all platforms in the United States.

With the rematch being predicted as a 50-50 event, it will likely attract even better numbers. After all, it is Gervonta Davis fighting for his legacy. And this time, things won’t be that easy—at least, that’s what Shakur Stevenson thinks.

Lamont Roach is unlike anyone ‘Tank’ has ever faced according to Stevenson

In a recent interview with FightHubTV, Shakur Stevenson bluntly predicted, “I like Lamont in the rematch.” Having sparred with The Reaper in the past, Stevenson knows firsthand what the Washington native brings to the table.

Additionally, the contrasting style of Gervonta Davis and Roach gives Sugar even more confidence in his pick. Though he kept any specific tactics under wraps, saying, “I could be fighting these guys. However, he promised the fans that, “It’s going to be hell of a fight.”

The conversation shifted back to Gervonta Davis and his performance. Unlike the general narrative, Stevenson refused to believe that Tank was not his usual self. Rather he gave credit to Roach and his remarkable strategy to hold out. “Nah, he was the same Tank. Everybody goes through stuff,” he explained.

Well, it seems like we have found at least one person who will be in the crowd for the rematch. Furthermore, with Roach’s inspiring performance the first time around, PBC has somehow hit the jackpot, giving them another golden fight without even trying. And if this time he pulls it off, all hell will break loose.
