Canelo Alvarez is hands-down one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world. If his dominance in the boxing scene wasn’t clear, look at his previous opponents and the state Canelo has left them in. One of those opponents is Billy Joe Saunders! The duo went toe-to-toe back in May 2021, and the fight resulted in Saunders losing more than the fight. But what happened to Saunders?

During their last clash, besides losing the fight, Saunders suffered his first career loss. What’s more, the Brit even suffered a fractured eye socket that has resulted in him staying out of the ring for over two years at this point. However, things seem to be turning around for the Hertfordshire resident. In a recent interview with talkSport Boxing, Saunders revealed details about his comeback to the square ring in the undercard of the much-talked-about fight between Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn.

During the interview with talkSport Boxing, Saunders began by asserting that he and his team were waiting on Eddie Hearn for a date. “We’re just waiting on Eddie with a date,” he told talkSport. He went on to acknowledge that Hearn is trying to make the Benn vs. Eubank Jr. fight and speculated his bout would be on the undercard of that fight. “Obviously, he was trying to make the Eubank-Benn fight, and I think the date was gonna be on the card,” said Saunders.

In addition, Saunders revealed the current state of Hearn’s effort to arrange the all-British fight between Benn and Conor. “At the moment, what I’m hearing is that Eddie is just trying to get over a few hurdles to see if he can [finalize] it this week,” he said. Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that Saunders handed Eubank Jr. his first career loss back in 2014.

There is barely a bigger generational rivalry between two different families in the boxing community. Chris Eubank Sr. fought Nigel Benn in the nineteen hundreds twice, and now their sons were supposed to face each other to settle the rivalry once and for all. However, with such big names involved in such a big event, drama wasn’t far behind.

In a surprising turn of events, Benn tested positive for banned substances present in his system. That followed the suspension of Benn’s boxing license, forcing him to stay out of the ring. What’s more, even though NADP lifted his suspension, UKAD and BBBofC appealed the decision, and the same appeal has become a hurdle in the fight between them scheduled for early 2024.
