WBO Interim titlist Shakur Stevenson appears to have mandated his spot to earn a world title shot against Jamel Herring this year. Following a tremendous run of 16-0, ‘Fearless’ has finally opted for the gold and might take on ‘Semper Fi’ in a 12-rounds main-event, possibly in Atlanta.

However, the fight is still in the works and nothing is official as of now. But Top Rank, which promotes both men, appears optimistic about staging the 130 lbs thriller. While it would determine Stevenson’s ability as a world champion, it would also hold sheer importance for Herring’s fighting future.

Jamel Herring, 23-2, is currently on a seven-fight win streak. He knocked out Carl Frampton in April to retain the WBO world title. Meanwhile, Shakur Stevenson would look to become a world champion and maintain his undefeated streak. Still fresh from his win against Jeremiah Nakathila, ‘Fearless’ commented on a potential fight against ‘Semper-Fi’.

Speaking with ESPN, Shakur Stevenson said, “I go fight Jamel Herring next and go beat him and then go beat Oscar Valdez. They’ll be saying I’m the best young fighter and put me on the pound-for-pound list.”

The stacked 130 lbs division boasts of one of the deepest rosters in the sport. The likes of Oscar Valdez, and Gervonta Davis, hold world titles over there. Hence, becoming a champion there would demand a lot from the 24-year-old. Meanwhile, Jamel Herring will be his first big test.

The fight is likely to happen this year. However, the Top Rank Kingpin, Bob Arum, didn’t prefer to comment on it as they have a big event in Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder 3 underway. Meanwhile, Herring also looked unbothered about facing Stevenson. However, he claimed to be ready if it happens.

“You can hear it in my voice, I’m not really stressing about this fight. I know people said I would avoid the fight because I wanted to fight Oscar Valdez. I just felt in my heart a fight with Oscar Valdez is bigger for my career,” said ‘Semper Fi’.

Nevertheless, the much-awaited super-featherweight fight is still valid. While it may take some time to happen, Herring and Stevenson have several more things underway. Though they can avoid each other and opt for separate fights, the belts they hold demand a collision.
