“I’ve still got the Baddest Gradson on the planet,” that’s how Devin Haney’s grandmother, Renee Jannah, would celebrate his wins. No one was more Team Hanley than her. Whether it was backing Haney’s decision to go pro as a teenager or proudly celebrating his undefeated record, she loved to share updates about him.

Similarly, he had a lot of faith in her support. Once, he even FaceTimed her so that she could talk to Guy Fieri- an American restaurateur and author. Unfortunately, as revealed by Devin Haney, she passed away. Following the tweet from Haney today, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, too, paid his condolences to Devin Haney on social media. “On behalf of all the members of the WBC family, I wish to express our deepest condolences to William Haney and our champion Devin and pray for [the] eternal rest of Renee Jannah,” wrote Sulaiman.

Moments before his post became public, Devin’s father, Bill Haney, turned to Instagram, penning a gracious message for his mother. He wrote, “Alahamdulillah. My Mom taught us [so] much, and she will be missed by me for the rest of my life. From Allah, she came, and to Allah, she will return. Inshallah. AllahuAkbar.”

Renee was often seen at Devin’s matches, including his last fight in December against Regis Prograis. She became an avid boxing fan because of her grandson. But do you know what other moment she was extremely proud of? Seeing Barack and Michelle Obama back in 2013.
